MG MGA - leaky fuel pump - replace or rebuild?
Well, it seems like gremlins have attacked my car. Now my fuel pump is leaking: http://img146.imageshack.us/img146/6559/fuelpumpleaksk4.jpg It seems to work fine otherwise, however, though it did stop once. (I used the MG mechanics best friend - the hammer - to get it to work again.) It looks like I would just have to cut a rubber gasket to fix it. Is this likely the problem, or should I rebuild it? I noticed a rebuild kit is about $60, which is less than I could buy a universal fuel pump for. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. |

Darian - That looks like the diaphragm that is leaking from. You may be able to top the leak by just tightening the screws holding the coil housing to the pump body. If that doesn't stop the leak, then it is rebuild time. You can rebuild it yourself or send it to one of the people who do rebuilds. See my article SU Fuel Pumps 101 at: http://www.custompistols.com/cars/dave/dd_su_fuel_pumps_101.htm and the write up of my SU fuel pump services at: http://www.custompistols.com/cars/dave/ddsu_fuel_pump_services.htm Cheers - Dave |
