MG MGA - LED lights?
Hi guys, I've put this on the MGB technical page too. Last year I saw some great LED stop , side and indicator lights that were LEDs. The "bulb" was made up of a number of LEDs, so that light shone in all directions, and it fitted into a standard buld holder, like a normal filament bulb. I was out of cash, took the guy's card (lost it), and can't find them anywhere. Any ideas where I can get such bulbs? (preferably UK, but will consider the USA as the dolar is UK-friendly) Many thanks, Grant |

Hi Grant try these people , I replaced all my side/tail/indicator bulbs on my MGA with Haleogen bulbs rather than LED which they said were better http://www.classic-spares-electrical.com/phdi/p1.nsf/supppages/bby?opendocument&part=14 gordon |

I've read somewhere that the current for LED lamps is too small to operate the flasher unit. Apparently a resistor must be put in the circuit to emulate a tungsten bulb. David |

Apparent source for both postive and negative earth LED lights: http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffyleds.htm I'd be intersted to know if they can really provide prositive earth units, as described. My understanding is that an additional resistor is required to produce sufficient current draw to operate the flasher unit. Companies that sell the LED lights often sell a resistor unit for this purpose. Note that LEDs are highly directional in their light ouput, so will not appear equally bright from all observation points. Larry |

Another problem with LED's is they produce a much whiter light. This can look a little odd in the front side lights. In particular when the headlights are on which have a warmer more yellow light the LED's look noticably different in colour. Regards...JB |

I just tried exactly the LED you're talking about, to replace the 1157 tail light. Compared side by side, the led bulb was much dimmer than the standard tungsten. Also, the brake cicuit did not operate the bulb properly, it seemd to flash or flicker constantly. I would not recommend them. Why is LBC Co. the only source for halogen replacement bulbs? I've been searching around to go directly to the manufacturer, but I have only a few leads right now. mark |
