MG MGA - LED rear lights
In the end-dash to get the car ready for MOT, I have also finally got these working as intended - I had to replace the flasher unit with one designed for LEDs. I got a suitable one easily, but the casing was brown and transparent plastic so a quick spray with silver paint has toned it down to match. It has no tab to mount, so I used a stainless aquarium clip to secure it to the firewall. Result : not only are the lights MUCH brighter than before, they flash at the right speed, and there is a marked difference in the two intensities of light and brake/flasher. I know that these are expensive, much more so than some of the led bulbs available, but as the full area of the lens is lit, it really makes for a very bright and very visible effect. I have ordered some high power LED bulbs for a friend's boat, and I'll report on the comparison when they arrive. On past experience, the special MGA units will far outperform the standard auto bulbs. On a practical note, the first set of LEDs were sent to Swaziland instead of Switzerland (the perils of drop-down menus in action), and our BMC Brian sent a second set without any fuss or bother at all (though I do suspect his shipping clerk experienced some fuss!). When the original set turned up here a couple of weeks ago, I told Brian, and have paid him and re-sold them to a friend for fitting in his car when I re-wire it in the next few weeks. It was a very painless experience in dealing with BMC, and if you go for these lights, I'd strongly recommend going with him. |
