MG MGA - Lock out on reverse gear

Does anyone have information on a mechanical lockout device for a standard MGA 4 speed gearbox. Something like you see on some cars with a gear shift gate with a hinged flap blocking reverse?

Mike the only one I've seen is the one fitted to Kent Prather's MGA race car and it uses a different shifter assembly. Photos and some details on the car are posted on the British Race Car site. http://www.britishracecar.com/KentPrather-MG-MGA.htm

Mike, I was looking at the transmission and it doesn't look like it would be too hard to fabricate something that would mount off the bolts for the shifter tower and extend back to the lever area. Not sure about how much clearance there is with the trans cover though.

For many years when racing I used a simple hinged lever that was mounted on the top of the transmission tunnel to the front of the gear stick and was knocked over i.e back to the horizontal position to avoid hitting the reverse detent area when changing down from third to second.
Sorry I have not any photos as no longer have that car.

All the best

Hi Mike, I have a lock-out on my MGB 'race' car, it's simply an inverted square 'U' shaped bracket with a hinge on top and to the left of the gearstick. I can take a photo if you need it.

I have the opposite reverse problem . The detent ball is missing that holds reverse in.............. ( self inflicted wounds ) The U shaped bracket device may be able to hold reverse. A photo please. The selector spring is able to hold reverse until provoked. Other wise the box is now very nice through the gears. Most of the trouble was in the selector housing. Sean

Thanks Don, a photo would be appreciated.
