MG MGA - Looking at an A to buy
I'd like to make sure I'm getting an A with an A engine, even if it isn't 'matching numbers'. I've owned a B and an A 40 years ago, but I wasn't that fussy back then. What are the differences between a '60 A engine (badged as a 1600), and a B or ? My TD has a data plate. Do A's too? Anything on these pics give a clue? ..... |

The engine No is stamped on a plate riveted to the top of the engine block. |

Is there a handy list of engine numbers that I can compare it to? ... |

Main difference is the mechanical tacho drive for the MGA, which I don't see (the cable) in your pictures. Engine plates are easily removed and replaced, so no guarantee. |

Why not buy Clausager's book "Original MGA"? That provides all the answers to what should or shouldn't be fitted. |

There are a number of cosmetic modifications in the engine compartment, but nothing that cannot be put back to original if desired. Neil has queried the apparent lack of a tacho drive. If this is the case then, more than likely, you have an 1800 engine implant from a B. A quick check of the instrument panel will likely give you another clue. If it is an 1800 you will have an electronic tachometer (Smiths). All instruments in the A should be Jaeger. One other obvious mod is the alternator. The A came with a generator. Many of us have all these modifications and a lot more. Steve |

An early MGB 3 main bearing 1800 engine will have a mechanical tach drive. If you think you may have an early B engine you can look on the left hand side of the block near the front plate. You should see a 18 cast in the block. I just put a 3 main B engine in my '59 1500 and it makes a world of difference in handling our mountain roads in NC. |

Early cars listed engine numbers on the main body plate. Later cars helpfully read "see engine". Neil Cairns made a list of all BMC engine numbers and the cars that they were used in. A 1500 engine from an MG Magnette doesn't have the tachometer drive, nor will a transplant from other contemporary BMC cars. They will have different engine number prefixes though. There are plenty of honest reasons for an engine swap on a 60 year old car. |

Why not post the number here ? |
