MG MGA - Looking for hubs
Does anyone out there know where I can find a drivers side rear splined hub? I just finished installing a rebuilt motor and a gearbox that i rebuilt. As luck would have it when i got it all running i was sitting in the garage ready to go, popped it into reverse and as i was just beginning to back out a terrible grinding sound happened. At first i thought i had made some huge mistake in the tranny that caused reverse to grind or possibly a clutch issue. But I put it into first and just as i started to move it did it again. I'm just about positive that my rear hub busted loose from the rim. Has anyone had this happen to them? When i checked a couple of the other wheels i noticed that the rims had quite a bit of play on the hubs. Is there any fix aside from replacing all my hubs and rims? Not driving it after all that work is killing me, it sounds soo good. |

Ryan, "just about positive"? If you stripped the splines on the hub it will be obvious by inspection. Seems hardly possible to do this just backing out of the garage unless you were in a big hurry. Can you describe the problem in more detail ? |

Hi Art, I had the back cover off so that i could see the rear end where the drive shaft connects. As I was just starting to go in reverse the drive shaft would move slowly then as i let the clutch a little more out it would all of a sudden spin fast which was accomopanied by the sound mentioned above. My friend who was helping out on the car noticed that the rear knock off had spun independantly of the wheel when the noise happened. When i checked the hub there are still spines in there although they did appear worn and not as sharp as other ones on the car. I said that I was just about positive because there is a possibility that it could be the rear end. However I had a hub break loose from a rim on the front drivers side once while breaking and the sound it made was very similar to the one i just experienced except that i wasnt actually driving. |

If one spline is worn out then chances are they are all worn out. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but that is an unsafe condition. If you spin one on the road you could lose your braking ability or even lose a wheel altogether! You need to replace all those splines immediately. Ask me how I know! |

Ryan, looks like you're in for a big bill. Sounds like the splines on both the hubs and wheels are worn badly. If so, then both need replacement. Worn splines on a hub can ruin a new wheel and the same for new wheels on old splines. Check out this link to Barny Gaylord's site for some good information on splines. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/wheels/wl104.htm |
