MG MGA - Loose wheel spokes - observation
A few months ago I checked my wheel spokes and had a couple of broken ones replaced (48 spokers)- all nice 'n tight. Two weeks ago I had 5 runs in our club hillclimb competion - I checked the spokes again yesterday - left hand rear now has 8 loose ones, non broken, other wheels are okay. Dropping the clutch at 4,500 rpm and a bit of wheelspin sure removes rust and paint from spokes! Regards Mike |

Mike, you're finding out why the factory went to 60 spoke wires for competition cars. 48 spoke wheels just can't take the torque for long. If you're really serious about the hill climbs and such I'd advise finding a set of at least 60s or even easier 72s off of a TR6. The 72s will be almost indestructable on the MGA. |

Sounds like the spokes are out of balance. This can be cured providing the rim is not warped. 60-spoke wheels are certainly stronger although I have a set of custom built Daytons that are claimed to be maintenance-free. So far they have lived up to that name despite some very spirited driving over the past year or so. |
