MG MGA - Loud Noise
Just returned from a superb trip to the Loire valley in France, the MGA driving beautifully. Just one question: about 3 times we found a very loud noise similar to a fan, coming from the engine. Even after switching off the ignition this noise persisted for 10-15 seconds. I noticed that the central pin in the starter solenoid had not retracted, does this mean that the starter motor was spinning but not engaging the flywheel (the engine was not turning over)? How to prevent this recurring again? Thanks, any advice welcome. Doug |

Hi Glad you enjoyed this part of the world. Sounds like the solenoid/ starter switch is sticking. Is your starter cable too tight maybe or not retracting far enough after you pulled it? Barry |

Heater blower motor? Bad switch or a short? |

If the noise happens again Doug, try disconnecting the starter motor at the switch end. If it stops the noise, then you have proved it is the starter. Your heater fan should switch off with the ignition and so it wont run once the engine is switched off. Does your engine have the standard inertia starter motor or the later MGB Hi-torque/gear reduction type? How did the Loire Valley trip turn out and was the spare parts list of use? Colyn |

Thanks B Bridgens, that looks like the solution. Yes, a fantastic trip to the Sologne, Chenonceau, Valencay, Tours and on to Brittany and Normandy, hot and sunny most of the time. Colyn, never needed any of the spares, apart from already mentioned the MGA ran beautifully all the way. Pic. attached, my daughter Morag's first drive in the MGA, she loved it! Cheers, Doug |
