MG MGA - Lowering the rear - Will an MGB kit work?

Hi guys,

I've seen an MGB rear axle lowering kit on Ebay for banjo axles. Does anyone out there know:
a) if these kits work with the MGA?
b) if they don't, are there any good/cheap ways to lower the rear on an MGA?

Cheers,

Grant :-)

If the kit is for Banjo B then it will fit an A too. Other ways to lower the rear is to de-arch the springs and or reverse the rear spring mount so it is on the bottom of the spring rather than the top.

John,

cheers for that. Not sure if I will lower the rear, but it's good to know that a MGB banjo kit will work.

Thanks,

Grant :-)

In the same general area: Have any of you folks on that side of the pond fit the parabolic rear springs that the Owners Club sells on an MGA? If so: A) how much work is involved? B) is the handling that much better than just with a Koni conversion?

OK, as Desi Arnaz would say, "'slpain me something": Why would you want to lower the axle? Is this lowering the axle from from the body, ie, to jack up the rear end like a 60s muscle car; or to lower the rear end of the car towards the ground, in which case, why would you want it to scrape every speed bump it encounters?

David Breneman

David B,

I was thinking about lowering the rear, not jacking it. I appreciate the speed bump issue (damn AC/Shelby for the Cobra and that car causing speed limits to be introduced in the UK!), but there's not many near me, and I plan you use the car mainly on country lanes and twisty roads where the only risk of scraping will be roadkill or horse pooh ;-)

David W,

I've asked around the MGOC, Moss and a few other people, and everybody says that the parabolics can't be fitted to an A, but didn't seem to really know why. I appreciate the "springyness" of the A leaf springs might be different to those of the B, but surely they're the same length and width? It might just change the handling a bit?

Cheers,

Grant :-)

does anybody have the rear spring length eye to eye also the height from the eyes to the short section of blade where it fits onto the axle
trevor

Dear Grant

Be careful with lowering the rear its probably low enough already. I have lowered the front just a fraction and the exhaust will ground on speed humps.
I am told on good authority that the front should be stiff ie; stronger springs and roll bars etc but the back should be as soft as possible. I did try rear Telescopic Koni's and it was not pleasent they are to stiff and make the back end bang and clunk. I expect they would be great for racing but I went back the to the original leaver arms. the back floats about a bit but at least I still have my fillings. Has any one else found this?
P.S. any one like to buy a telescopic Koni set 01580 763166
