MG MGA - lucas 576 fog lights

I notice that the Lucas 576 yellow lense fog lights come in two different types of lenses. One is a clear yellow with a smooth surface lense and the other is a fluted frosted type yellow lense.

Could someone please explain the difference between the two. Is it something to do with optics etc. thanks

Gordon Harrison

Here is the other type.

I was under the impression that, in the UK, forward facing amber lights are illegal. They are only permitted for indicator lights.

The non-fluted light is a driving light. Not a fog light per se. It is a long range spot, not a flat top fog light as the fluted one is. Yellow lenses were used in the '60's and early 70's.

But there's a difference between the amber of a turn indicator and the yellow of a spot light. Amber is almost orange by comparison. That said, I don't think I've even seen OEM yellow fog lights. They all seem to be white. And even the French have given up on yellow headlights.

Here is an example of yellow lenses in the Lucas 576 housings.

Or like me you could choose the slightly easier route of putting yellow bulbs into a standard light. But it isn't easy to find the yellow prefocus bulbs. These are the only normal filament bulbs on my car (apart from the charging warning light).

Dominic, the yellow bulbs are available:

As are amber bulbs that were used in these lights on Bentleys in the 1950s as front indicators

I think that the use of the word "amber" is too ambiguous in the case of the light lenses. They are most definitely "yellow" IMHO.

I am in the market for a single NOS yellow 576 foglight if anyone has a lead.

Neil,
The reason I brought this up is because I am selling on (lucas 576) on Ebay at the moment. I was confused between the clear yellow and the amber fluted lights. Steve's expalnation was very helpfull and expalined difference.

Dominic,
Under the same Ebay listing ...Lucas 576....there are yellow bulbs for sale. You might want to take a look.
Gordon Harrison

Thanks for the tip, I already have a spare bulb or two in the bulb drawer

C.R.'s advice is correct. There are rules about how they are mounted in the UK but yellow remains acceptable.

IIRC the clear yellow lenses were for the continental market (France, primarily) and as said, they are driving lights.
