MG MGA - Lucas Distributor Info for 40718A 23D4 ?
Hi Guys. I have one of these distributors which is missing the base plate. Firstly does anyone know what the lucas part number is for the none vacuum advance base plate? I know the "With" Vacuum advance base plate part number is 422318 Perhaps someone knows where I can get one of these too? If it helps this is for a twin cam Cheers Mark |

Mark. This fellow claims to have base plates available: http://www.distributordoctor.com/contact.php on his website. Jeff Schulmer (sp?) has a distributor rebuilding operation here in the US and may be able to help in your search. Someone should be along to post his website address. E-mail to both might be worthwhile. Is there any difference between the points plates on the vacuum advance equipped models and the non-vacuum advance equipped models? I have only seen the former myself. But, considering the fact that Lucas made one basic model of distributor at a time, I wonder if the points plates were the same for both the vacuum and non-vacuum versions? Les |

Les - Vac (25D) dist has a two piece plate, such that the upper bit rotates on the lower to change timing, 23D is one piece. Mark - You can just braze the two piece plate together at the center spigot to replace the solid plate. Center the plate in its travel before brazing. Fixed plate is #54410498 OE, but beware - Lucas loved changing/superseding part numbers back in the 60-70s! Or the dist itself may have been changed to a later one - Cooper S or early 1275 Spridget are most common. Later replacement plates tend not to have the pivot post for the points, after they went to the "Quikfit" type points (mid/late 60s), and these will have different numbers also. FRM |

Definitely talk to Jeff Schlemmer at www.advanceddistributors.com - he does wonderful rebuilding work, and has a large stash of parts. |
