MG MGA - mainshaft 3rd speed gear end-float
Allow me to throw in another question. I disassembled the gearbox, renewing the layshaft and its bearings, as well as the bearings on the input shaft and the mainshaft. I renewed the rings on either end of the laygear and now the float is about 0.002", just on the lower spec limit. However the 3rd spped gear end-float, which is supposed to be .002" - 0.004" ends up being more like 0.008" or 0.2mm, twice the upper spec limit. I replaced all the rings between the gears, and ordered the thickest thrust washer, which will bring it to 0.006" at best. I'm not going to race the car: just put it in and move on? What would be the effect of this out-of-spec end-float? -- Paul |

No functional problem with 0.006" end float for 3rd gear. Install it and drive it. The gears can tolerate a fair amount of wear on the bronze thrust washer, which usually wears very little. If you installed a new bronze thrust washer, everything should be well until the layshaft and 2nd gear synchro ring wear out again. |
