MG MGA - Massachusetts Question
A question for Mass MGA owners. What does our intrepid Registry of Motor Vehicles use for a value to calculate sales tax on the initial registration? Thanks, Doug |

Doug, when I titled my 1958 MGA the Registry compared my receipt and I believe a reference to book value and used my $6500 receipt to calc the sales tax. A couple of years ago when I registered my MGB exactly the opposite happened.... my receipt was for a few hundred $'s due to the car being inoperative. But they checked book value and calculated the sales tax on a value of $2k. When I questioned why, the clerk implied tax would be paid on the higher of the amount paid or their value reference. Hope this helps. |

Hi folks, here is what we do in Vermont. Go to a car dealer and get an appraisial, before any work is done. Register vehicle at much reduced value. repair car. re-register. when i did my midget up i had a receipt for the sale price and receipts totalling lots of money for parts. they didnt care at all, and hit me with a 3oo.oo registration fee......never again mark |

Mass uses a book value, "cars of particular interest" IIRC. You have to have a sales receipt. I just registered a plow truck and they wouldn't do it without a bill of sale, even though they use the book. They want the higher of the two. There is, at present, no way around it. |

Thanks to all...Guess my genuine $100.00 Bill-of-Sale won't fly... Happy New Year, Doug |

Man..thats awful, here in Mi I don't even like the 6% sales tax.Call me niave, but do people there just accept that,no gettin on your state rep. That's arbritary taxation. |

It's worse than arbitrary taxation it's often double taxation. In the case of my MGB... I paid tax or a higher value than the car was worth at the time. Then I bought parts from Massachusetts companies and paid tax on them. A $3k engine from Proper PM cost me $150 is sales tax.... ouch! |

Brian, Don't forget our excise tax making it a triple whammy. COL, Doug |

Doug: By way of consolation, the excise tax on my '57 coupe has been $5.00 per year since I bought it three years ago. Regards, M.D. |
