MG MGA - Master cylinder cover

How far down must I drain my brake master cylinder, in order to replace the cover. My current MC is on my 1500 (lower type) but I am installing disc brakes and will be using the 1600 tall cover. Can this be done without draining the master cylinder completely.
Gordon Harrison

There is a small air space in top of the reservoir, dictated by a short internal neck on the cover. You can remove the flat 1500 type cover without losing fluid. However, this originally had a cork gasket which may need cleaning before installing a new gasket, and you might get gasket trash in the reservoir while doing it.

Changing from drum to disc brakes requires disconnecting the front pipes, so that would be a good time to do the master cylinder work while the fluid is drained.
