MG MGA - Master Cylinder or Clutch Slave Cylinder
If it isn't obvious I've started digging around the MG for the season. In any event can you all give me some diagnostic steps for checking the functioning of the MC and the clutch Slave. My symptom is that I find that under somewhat aggressive driving that there is a bit of lag in the acceleration of the motor after I shift gears. It might be a bit of slippage (I put in a new clutch only 9,000 miles ago) I find that if I slow down and give it a half second between lifting the clutch pedal and then pushing down the gas all is well. I rebuilt the MC about 10 years ago and put new innards in the Clutch Slave at the same time. I seem to remember that the bore of the Clutch Slave had some pitting that I couldn't hone out. So I'm wondering if its that. Thanks |

Check your system for residual pressure with the pedal fully up - get someone to depress the clutch ( don't need motor running) and when they let it up, crack open the slave bleed valve - if fluid spurts out rather than dribbles then you may have either a flex pipe that is breaking up internally with loose rubber acting like a one way valve - or you have managed to block the return drilling in the master cylinder when honing it. |

Hi Tysen Good to see you back. I agree with Chris. I would also add that new slaves are cheap and I'd replace rather than try and refurbish it. I would just install a new hose at the same time. I have just had my MC apart because of an intermittent failure to disengage the clutch completely. Some mornings it was fine, others I could not get the car into gear , and then 1km later everything would be fine. I found that in front of the cup seal (in fact in front of the part of the piston with the holes in it) there was a lot of black grunge that appeared to be bits of seal. I have replaced both the MC clutch side seals (luckily I had a Caparo kit on hand because of the intermittent operation). This Caparo MC is only five or six years old! Dominic |

Thanks Dominic! The boys are mostly grown now which leaves time for getting back into the car. Its now 8 to 10 years since the last round of major mechanicals, so it appears time to start over again. |
