MG MGA - Master cylinder reservoir cap

Was the master cylinder reservoir cap interchangeable on all MGA variants?
Rick deOlazarra

Rick,

Yes it was the same cap except for the Twin Cam which had separate clutch and brake reservoirs. Most replacement caps are white plastic. Original were steel, but now a rare item.

I seem to recall someone on this board saying that replica steel caps are available from Scarborourgh Faire.

Physically interchangeable, yes (except for Twin Cam and "Deluxe cars). 1500's had a metal cap, and 1600's had a white plastic cap (roughly speaking). I don't know if the change over point for the screw cap would coincide exactly with the change to the tall reservoir cover. It is common to find a plastic replacement cap on some of the earlier cars. The metal caps are now being reproduced, not perfect but a very good representation of the original part.

Thank you.
I'm working with a pressure bleeder mfr. (Motive), and they sent me their bleeder with a "Classic British Adapter" (cap and hose) that allegedly will work with my MGA. Problem is, it doesn't; the cap is the right inner diameter, but the threads don't match up. They use a "test rig" for MGs, from which they fashioned their "Classic British Adapter". (which, like I said, doesn't fit [my] MGA)
I'm trying to determine what caps are interchangeable and what aren't in order to steer them in the direction of producing caps that will work with (most) MGs.
When I get the replacement AP unit from Bob West, I'll probably loan (or give) Motive the old cap and new flat cover so they can get it right for MGAs.
Am I correct in assuming that the MGB caps are different than the MGA caps? (ie: his test rig may be only for MGBs?)
And...do the MGTC and MGTD, TF caps differ from each other?
And...(again) does the Gunsen's EeziBleed come with a cap that correctly fits MGAs?
Many thanks; sometimes I feel like I'm sucking you people dry. :)

Hi

My Gunsen came with a cap that fits my 1600.

I recently bought a gunson Eezibleed kit and it does have a 1" Lockheed type cap in it that fit my m/c .

I've also heard that some reproduction m/c lids do not have correctly formed threads and normal caps don't fit them too well............Mike

It was Colin Manley that had some caps made for his MGA - he was selling them on ebay for around £15 each - contact him via this email :- manley.colin@talk21.com

If you contact Gunson they will send you a cap. (That's what they did for me). I may even have received two, so if you draw a blank, drop me a line and I'll have a look in the relevant box in the cellar

For everyone's information, the original steel cap is now made and sold by Scarborough Faire. It has been available for about one year.

Thanks for the mention Cam. The production of caps i had is now exhausted - i only now have Trackers, MG car profile shirts (as you know) and hand drawn artworks of your classic. Cecelia's product is very good value - beware of import tax & Post Office tax collection fees if buying in to the UK. There is a mini specialist selling caps on e-bay but they are inferior, with tooling marks and indentations.

NTG Motor Services Ltd in the UK sell the original syle metal cap. Their part number is NKD44D and the price is £10.20 (incl.VAT). This firm also trades under the name of MGbits4u.

I have a motive pressure bleeder and modified an old plastic cap to fit the master cylinder. I have done this for many of my cars. Since most all caps are vented in some way I gut the cap of whatever is used then drill and thread a hose barb through where the vent hole was using epoxy to make a tight seal. My primary use is to flush the system of old fluid. No need for high pressure when using it this way so no chance of leaks, the high pressure needed to bleed once blew out my cover gasket. Chuck

Charles,
I've got the same idea you had, (sort of); I ordered a Gunsen's EeziBleed in order to adapt the cap/tube within with the Motive bleeder. Same old story, huh?...adapt, drill, bend, twist, & pound a part to get it to work.
