MG MGA - Matching Numbers?
I realize there are three indentification numbers to our MGAs ... Vin number, Chasis number and the Motor number. Would any of the numbers be matching on a newly produced MGA fresh from the factory? I realize the significance of the letters in the various numbers, however, should any of the numbers be matching? If not, is there any way to determine if my motor is original to the car? |

There are Three useful numbers Chassis No on plate in front of the Heater Box Body No on welded plate behind heater on body firewall engine No on Right side of engine block Unfortunately the Heritage certificate I have for my MK 2 Coupe only shows the chassis no I don't think they recorded the engine No or body No which makes it difficult to assertain if all the parts were original to the car. I was lucky that previous owners recorded all this information and all the papers were kept and handed over to me when I purchased the car Paul |

Whilst engine and body numbers were never recorded against a particular car, the sequence of numbers is well known. From this you can determine if the engine is about right to within a year; the same also applies to body numbers. There are a surprising number of cars around that have the incorrect body for a particular year of car. See Original MGA by Clausager. Also the car number contains within it the chassis number, although this can be difficult to find, on the crossrail below dash. |
