MG MGA - MG2006 Pictures - EX186, 100,000th...

I just got back from MG2006. What a pile of MGs! I've never seen so many. Unfortunately, I ran out of room on my camera.

Man, that's one clean Twincam. I'll bet the wiggle in the fender welting drives him nuts..
Tom

I wish I had more room on my camera. I think I counted five twin cams (not including the race cars). Most were that tidy. There had to be a couple hundred MGAs. Not only were there really rare pre-war cars, but several of each. There was a row of RHD MGTCs, probably 2 dozen MGB LEs, a 'BGT Jubilee... I tried to capture the volume of cars there and I'm sure as people return home, more pictures will be posted. I went to specifically to see the race cars and what a treat they were.

Kemper,

Would you mind if I use your pictures of EX-186 to add another page to my web site? These are the first pics I've seen with the new paint. See here:

Sure Barney, use any and all the photos you like.

My wife and I talked to Joe's (the current owner-pictured holding bonnet) friend/co-restorer, Worthy (from my wife's memory-tallest of three guys in front of EX186, with grey shirt in picture 772) about the car. The current engine is not correct for the car. The original engine is still being held captive by a fellow in Washington state, I believe. It is apparently disassembled and in storage. That's storage as in the guy just wants to keep it, not that he has plans for it. Worthy said they have been trying to get the correct engine for some time and they even offered to trade the guy a NOS TC engine in exchange. His response was to have his phone disconnected. Initially, the guy did let them take photos of the some of the original pieces, but his attitude has since changed. It's a shame. It looks as though the guy's death is the only hope of reuniting the car and engine.

The car is very clean and not overly restored. In fact, I believe the outside paint is the only thing that is new. The car was apparently driven on the street for a time until the engine failedThey apparently have been having/had trouble finding the odd bits like light gaskets etc. They have a friend at Moss R&D that has been helpful in that regard. Joe had some lapel pins made of EX186 in honor of the event. I believe this was this first time it has been shown since restoration was started. I've added a photo of the pin to the above link. You could contact the event organiser?, Rick Ingram (mowog1@aol.com) to get more specific information for your pages. He may post a response when he makes it home.

Best Regards

Glad to see that "100,000" has lost the unfortunate shag carpeting and now has close sheared lambswool as original.
David Breneman

You are correct Kemper that this was the show of shows!. I have never seen as many pre WW2 models in one place at one time. As for the white carpet in 100K, I think it looked like shag but could have been wrong. Hope it is historically correct cause it looks like crap on such a nice car!(jmho)

Not a bad job on ex 186 for as Barney puts it $10 per month...

Did anyone take note of the engine number in it?

Cheers <MARK>

Well Kemper, you have a treasure trove of pictures there, an an eye for picking the right ones with historical significance. I'm not sure if youi realize everything you have captured there. I have posted quite a few of your pictures on multiple web pages with historical notes, and I have included click links to the larger copy of the image in most cases. See here:

Kemper,
Great job.
The only place I've ever seen that many MG's at once is at the Watkins Glen Vintage Festival. There were too many categories to actually get a vote in for each, at least for me. The day went by too fast, the rain just shortened it.
Cheers,

Have to agree it was a great show - If I recall correctly there were something like 68 1500's and 53 1600's on the show field - in any case there was a s***load of them! :)

Barney - you have mail with a pic of UMO 93 John Wright's Sebring Roadster.

One of the highlights of the show (for me) was when I won the 50/50 and took home $463!!

Thanks guys. I'm sure you all saw me there. I was the guy in the MG shirt taking pictures...

Rick, I missed (deleted) getting a picture of UM093. Can you send any/all that you have to me as well? Thanks.

Steve it looks like that Octagonal shape in the trunk is one of Namgar's GT awards from a former GT.

Regarding EX 186

Unless you had a chance to talk with Joe, Worthy and Cathy it's hard to get an understanding of what was entailed to get EX 186 to the event.

When Joe learned that so many ex factory race cars were going to be at MG2006 he decided that EX 186 had to be there. I'm sure many of you can relate how long it takes to assemble a car, but EX 186 came out of the paint shop about two weeks before the event. There was a tremendous amount of work necessary to identify and source the parts bin collection of pieces used by the factory to build the car. The lamp that needs a gasket that Matt referred to is used on the 1970 only MGB to illuminate the rear licence plate. In that application no gasket was used, hence no availability.
I apologise for forgetting the gentleman's name, but the other tired looking individual hanging around the car machined the brass windshield screws from stock after being unable to find a source. Check them out in the photographs.
Joe Gunderson and Steve Willis met in college as they both owned much loved mga twin cams. Their friendship continued with Steve starting a British scrap yard with his brother after graduation. When EX 186 showed up on the market the two of them were able to buy the car and trailer it to Colorado where they proceeded to study all available information about the car. This included spending a lot of time with Henry Stone when he visited the US. They wanted to ensure that EX 186 was assembled correctly and not just thrown together.
Steve passed away, but the work he put in with the preliminary fabrication of the exhaust system made Joe and Worthy feel like he was working with them, as they finalized the down pipes and finished fabricating the muffler. Check out the photographs that show the exhaust side of the car. The headers have four pipes that go through a 6" square channel down to the muffler.
Joe and Cathy have a lot of emotion tied up in the car, as do a number of others who were involved even in a small part in bringing a piece of MG history back to life. The car is not, and will not be for sale. It will be maintained as it is, a priceless piece of history that speaks of what might have been.
