MG MGA - MGA 1500 Master Cylinder HELP!
I purchased a working master cylinder a few years ago and am ready to install it. How do I remove the internal cylinders and springs to inspect them? |
Gerard |
Easiest way is with some gently applied air through the output orifice of each cylinder. Hold a towel over the cylinder because the air pressure can launch the rubber seal, etc. pretty fast. |

Gerard, You can use a simple foot pump or even a bicycle pump for Steves method above, if you don't have a compressor. I have done this many times, you don't normally even need a good seal. Mind you, I am assuming after all this time it hasn't rusted up solid! See the recent thread on silicon fluid too. Neil |

Maybe I don't know what I'm looking at but I dont see any rubber seals. I will post pictures monday to show what I see. |

If you can adapt a grease fitting to the cylinder, you can also remove the pistons hydraulically with a grease gun. Of course, then you will have a bit of a mess to clean up before you can reassemble it. |

This site has step by step details with lots of pictures. http://www.mgashop.com/mcrebuild.htm If this is a used master cylinder, I would recommend getting a rebuild kit for it. The rebuild kit with all the rubber parts is very inexpensive. Check the bores carefully for pitting. |

Gerard, The website that Jeff posted above is excellent for your problem. I used Chad's step by step instructions this past spring to do a total rebuild on my 1500 MC and it came out perfect and without drama. I see that Barney has also linked to this same site as well for this little project. Check it out, well worth the time. Clayton |
