MG MGA - mga 1600 bigger brakers
Hi. I would like better brakes on my MGA 1600. It already has front discs but will bigger MGB brakes bolt on? What have other people done. Thanks |

MGB brakes are not bigger. Same size pistons in the calipers and same brake force. If you did install more powerful brakes on the front you would upset the brake balance front to rear, and the front wheels would lock up prematurely. If you reduce pedal force to prevent front wheel lock up you reduce force on the rear brakes. End result is longer stopping distance. The MG brakes work quite well as original. If you want to reduce pedal force requirement consider installing a power brake booster. |

If your brakes are not good enough then they probably need attention - I have always found my 1600 front disc set up stops me well enough in normal road use - especially when I have cleaned up the pads and shoes before it's MOT - although it does need heavy foot pressure as all non-servo brakes do. Perhaps you need to fit a servo as Barney suggests - it will give you the modern car feel to the brakes. |
