MG MGA - MGA 1962: Difficult to start when hot

Hi,

I have problems in starting my MGA from 1962 when the engine is hot. My cars runs well for the first time. If I shut down the motor, let's say after a half hour driven it, it will not start. Only if I open the bonnet and wait for 10 minuts, the engine starts again well. What can be wrong?

Hot carburetors cause fuel to bubble in the base of the carb around the main jet. This is aggrevated by alcohol content in the fuel. The bubbles make the fuel mixture go very lean so it may sputter and run bad or may not start.

Solution is to pull the choke full out, give it partial throttle, and crank it up. Treat it similar to a lean running cold start, giving it just enough choke to keep it running well until fresh fuel flow and air flow can cool the carbs down a bit.

Thanks for the technical feedback. Can there anything to be done technically wise to avoid this behaviour. Is there something wrong with the cooling.

Hi Barney. I had a very bad case of vapour lock on my 1500 roadster. When I pulled the heatshield off, it was extremely rusty. I fabricated a new heatshield from shiny stainless steel, and installed the old heatshield insulation pads from the old heatshield. While the vapour lock problem hasnt entirely disappeared, it has vastly improved. Previously, the engine would not start when hot. Period. Now the engine always starts instantly. On very hot days, the engine will stumble a bit for perhaps 30 seconds, and then runs perfectly. In Ontario Canada, we sometimes get summer temperatures well exceeding 100 degrees F. It is those very hot days when the engine stumbles a bit. Cheers, GLenn
