MG MGA - MGA Air Filter Expanded Metal Ring
I recently purchased my 1st MGA...What an experience! The help and warmth of the owners community is undescribable. I am putting a couple of things back in order that were left unfinished by the PO. One small detail is replacing the rear air filter assy. The PO had installed an MGB disposable air filter. I have the original MGA Volks can, and have ordered fresh K&N filter elements, but am missing the expanded metal ring (flame arrestor?). I've done enough research to see that this is usually only sold with the full assy. Does anyone have one of these laying around? Any thoughts about getting one without having to buy the air filter assy? Thanks! Rick |

Rick Confused here. What expanded metal ring? Where is it supposed to fit? Steve |

Rick, Go to the Moss catalog and aquire a #. It will be easyer to help you. |

This part is not listed seperatly in the moss catalog. It is the metal mesh that fits around the outside of the filter element. It is made out of expanded metal and fits between the base of the filter assembly and the top cover of the filter assembly. |

There is really no need for the ring when using the K&N's unless you are just trying to get the look of an original. |

Rick, I just changed this year to the K&N filters in the original Volks housings. I did not refit the expanded rings because they would not fit over the K&N filter. I think they look fine without it. And they work fine also. You may find differently. My suggestion is to wait and see how your K&N's fit before trying to source the ring. Here is a photo of my installation. Chuck P.S. Welcome to the "club"! |

Thanks for the collective feedback on this. It looks like the best way to go is to use the K&Ns without the outside ring installed at all...so now, instead of needing to acquire one...I will have an extra one on hand! Cheers, Rick |

Hi Rick - welcome to the "club" - mine also has K&Ns without the mesh ring - looks OK to me even if not original- cheers Cam |

Gents, The K&N filters will fit inside the expanded mesh ring - just fold them in half to form a "U" then let them unfold inside the mesh ring. You also need to grind one pitch off the mesh cylinder or use spacers otherwise they don't seal. It is all explained on Barney's site. Thats if you want to keep original look Mike |

Not wishing to hijack 'Ricks' thread, but does anyone know where K&N's which will fit MGA housings are available from in the UK? Regards...John |

John, Bob West changed mine to K & N for me and still with the mesh ring. Give him or James a ring. I'm sure they have them in stock and will advise you on any tricks for fitting them. David |

I just replaced my old non original air filters with K & Ns . I got them from Brown & Gammons a complete kit cost around £80 the pair.I fitted a bolt on intake "socket " to the front cleaner case to take the rocker cover hose .They look good |

With every one playing around with the filter boxes, be sure to fit the rear one the correct way up, otherwise a vital air balancing hole to the piston can get blanked off. See image. I've done it. Messes up the performance and fuel consumption a bit. Steve |
