MG MGA - MGA BRAKE DRUMS

What is the standard ID of an MGA brake drum? What can they be turned out to?

As I recall they start out at 10" inside dia. You won't be able to go too big anyway as the shoes may not expand enough on full adjustment. At the moment I'm on full adjustment with new drums! You probably won't need to take much out to get them to clean-up and back to round. Just make sure you get them nice and concentric.

You can take a little more out of the front drums, because of the dual adjusters. Not so much on the rear with single adjuster. If the drums are getting too large, put the smaller ones on the rear and larger ones on the front.

Swapping the drums front to back only works with disc wheels. For more adjustment on the rears, you can also shim the adjuster, or replace the abutment with an MGB adjuster. Both methods are detailed on Barney's site.

All this talk of swapping front and rear drums! So 1500..!

Do any of you remember when they used to arc brake shoes? I wonder how many of those guys got Mesothelioma?

Yes, I watched it done on my MGA in 1969. Very effective turning drums then sanding the shoes to match the radius. Instant good braes with no break in time required.
