MG MGA - MGA Disc Brake Conversion Additional Questions
Hi All, Finally, the disc brake conversion for my MGA is underway. The reason? Drums way our of spec, leaking wheel cylinders, old hoses, etc. Most of the parts I got for basically free about 13 years ago including the adapter plates from Moss. Actually, I had 2 sets and sold one to a member in Australia. I also had a set of MGB calipers that looked awful, but a rebuild kit and some elbow grease and they are like new. I also had a complete disc brake front end from a 1600 (less callipers) The discs are shot, of course, and they were frozen but I managed to get everything freed up and have some spare kingpins in great shape. The hubs are OK, and serviceable at least but one of the rear bearings was bad, but one from my car is good so I will just swap it out. OK, now the big question; I have the original cast iron caliper mounting plates from the 1600. I also have the Moss machined set. Will the MGB calipers mount up and line up with the original 1600 mounting brackets or do I need to use the Moss ones? I would much prefer using the cast iron ones if they will work with MGB calipers, but if not, I still have a backup plan. Any ideas or past experiences? Thank you! Tommy |

MGB calipers do not work with MGA brackets (different offset. |

The new batch of MGA callipers is really well priced, just 50GBP each recently from Moss - a bargain with the latest Brexit-related exchange rates. Leacy came up with an oddball one for the RHS, but the replacement from Moss was a match for the Lockheed LHS one. I now have cured my squealing brakes, which were probably actually the rears because they were full of dust. I just need to get the visitors out of the garage so I have space for my car and get to drive it. It seems to be being getting more use as a courtesy car at the moment. |

Thanks Barney and Dominic. I have everything I need right now but like the idea of using the MGA calipers but it might be a little bit of a waste. That could be a future project when/if the MGB ones fail. The actual swap is quite simple. I think I am spending more time cleaning, touch-up painting and repacking bearings and such! Good time to do a little servicing. I have owned 3 MGBs (including the one 1979 one I have now) and all of them had squeaky front brakes. Thank you again. |
