MG MGA - MGA Distributor

Years ago, I owned a 1958 and 1957 MGA. In my toolboxes of assorted parts and pieces from As, Bs and even an MGC, there is a distributor that I think came from an MGA. Moss Motors doesn't show anything, but rebuilt ones so I thought I would ask some of the MGA experts what this is. It has mechanical vacuum advance and the numbers stamped on the side are "356 BN238" on the top and "40510A" below that. The lower line isn't as clear, but I think the numbers are correct.

I believe the "40510A" means it came from a 1500. On top of the distributor near the fine adjustment nut you should also see "DM2"- these were the dist. bodies used in MGAs.
Mark

Rick. As Mark notes, you have an MGA distributor of the Lucas DM2 pattern. The basic specification number is 40510 and the suffix indicates that the factory has made some form of change to the distributor which does not affect the specification. (Otherwise, they would have used a different specification number.)

This website will show you the tuning information for that distributor and what vehicles it was used on. I have rebuilt several 40510As for MGAs.

DM2 is indeed the part that I couldn't make out clearly. The "2" wasn't that clear. The plate for the points and condenser are missing, but if anyone of you has a use for this, let me know. I have an '80 LE now and have no use for it. I also have some original dash switches for lights and such.

I would love to have this, have emailed you offline

Anybody ever find a reliable source for distributor springs?
Karl Leclerc

Rick, I don't need the distributor, but could use the dash switches, let me know what you want for them.

Karl, the Mr.Gasket #928G spring kit that you can order or buy locally has a pair of "optimum" springs in it. They are the lightest, silver springs in the kit. They work tremendously well and even increase throttle response. I have installed them in a few dozen cars, all of which had positive results.

There is a DM2 distributor from a 1960 coupe on ebay at the moment - starting price £14.99 -Cheers Cam

I should mention that in a 12 degree distributor those springs produce a 1000-3050 (engine) rpm linear curve. It very close to the stock 40510 curve, but with the later onset to stabilize your idle.

Karl,

This guy on ebay seems to have access to some.

I tried to get some Twin Cam one's but no luck... he may have 40510 one's though.

Gil,
