MG MGA - MGA Guru Is Going Mobile
This should raise a few eyebrows and start some lively discussion. A few people know about this already, but since there is now a definite date it is time to make the public announcement. MGA Guru is going mobile in a big way. I have been planning and preparing for some time. I bought a laptop computer to replace my old tower cabinet PC and large desktop screen and separate keyboard. I bought a new digital camera, a cell phone, Bluetooth earpiece for hands free chat, and a miniature external hard drive for data backup, all of which can recharge from the USB port(s) on the computer. I also have a couple of Universal Car Chargers that plug into the cigar lighter and have switchable voltage output to recharge the laptop and to power a low voltage scanner. I will have to give up my beloved laser printer, but I haven't quite decided what to do for a portable low voltage printer (as I hate ink-jets). I haven't decided yet on a service provider for the mobile hotspot for wireless internet access anywhere, but that should happen this week. Why all this change and preparation? I have just officially retired, have picked up my first Social Security benefit check, and I am going on vacation. The kicker is, I will not be "coming home". To be sure it is nailed down firmly, the house has been sold, and the last day in my prior home of 35 years will be May 4, 2014. So where am I going on my retirement vacation? Nowhere in particular, just to wander around where the wind blows and wherever my urges may take me. Not needing to be anywhere on any given day there is no rush, so I plan to travel in a leisurely fashion, perhaps little or no mileage in any given day, or perhaps more travel if I actually intend to go somewhere in particular. There is a golden opportunity here for all those people who have said, "If you may ever be in the neighborhood stop in". So there will once again be a red MGA with a little black trailer following carrying camping gear, tools, a few car parts, some personal belongings, and this time communications equipment. The word is, home is where you hang your hat, and my hat will be in the MGA most of the time, wherever it goes. Meanwhile I will remain a loyal member of Chicagoland MG Club, and I intend to carry on my duties as Webmaster for the club, as well as maintaining my own web site MGAguru.com. These functions have always been carried out by remote access to the internet. Now that my computer and other equipment is portable, that remote access will not change, no matter where I may be. Just that I may not be attending so many local club membership meetings, and Staff meetings may do with more messages and one less live body in attendance. For anyone concerned, my prior land line will be disconnected after May 4, my new cell phone number is 630.946.3841, and feel free to call any time. I will definitely keep in touch. I will post regular updates on my activities on the MGA forum of the MG Enthusiasts web site, the MGA bbs on the UK server, likely have a new communications page on MGAguru.com, and I may even learn to use my Facebook account (maybe). Most people who visit MGAguru.com and send email and make phone calls would likely not notice any difference in the world. Pretty sure my snail mail address is going to change to a PO box number, yet to be determined. I so far have just one appointment for personal business in Arlington, Virginia, sometime soon but with no definite date. Let the discussions and inquires begin. Well if you decide to bring your red MGA over to the UK Barney, there will be a load of people over here who would love to meet up with you and I'm certain that there will be loads of offers of places to stay, including mine. I hope you really enjoy your retirement which sounds like its going to be a really busy and enjoyable one. All the best Colyn |

Enjoy it Barney. Sounds exciting! |

I hope it was the Oz MGA retirement commercial that forced your hand. It would be great if you could join the 60th celebrations in UK in 2015. Your challenge is now to travel to more countries in your MGA than Dave & Laurel Godwin! Every day is Saturday from now on. Mike |

Have a great retirement Barney. How you get the lathe, Welding kit, air compressor and all the tools in that trailer beats me. Steve |

When I bought my derelict MGA for a rebuild back in 1996, I did so with precious little knowledge of the type. The internet forums were in their infancy and I recall doing much of the work using the MGA workshop manual, Clausager and the exploded diagrams from the Moss parts catalogues. I must say it has been a fascinating journey these last 16 years. Over time I have discovered that, while I basically got it right, there was an amazing amount of fine detail that needed sorting. Seeing this thread about Barney's change in lifestyle got me thinking how much valuable information has been made available to us in recent years. Yes we have all contributed, but Barney above all has harnessed so much together for us to use as a reference source. Thanks Barney. Long may it continue. Steve |

Yes Steve....I had an MGB when Barney launched his site. I do somewhat lay blame on him for my MGA ownership. If he hadnt made it easy to dream about putting an A together I probably wouldnt have done it. I was in college broke with just a dream back then but he did leave an impact didnt he. I almost feel like I grew up while the site expanded. Amazing how comprehensive his explorations became. Great times! Cheers! :-) |

Best of luck to you Barney. You know where I live, stop by any time. George |

Barney, many thanks for all your help and support over these last 14 years since I also retired and joined the MGA fraternity. Enjoy! |

Barney...you're doing retirement the smart way...selling the house and going mobile. If you don't...or didn't...the house keeps dragging you back home...there's always something that needs to be done. I've been retired for almost 7 years now except for a 9 month stretch when I went back to work to help a friend...that was the longest 9 months of my life. Never again. If you're ever in south Mississippi near Biloxi, Gulfport, Pass Christian, Bay St Louis, Ocean Springs, etc., there'll be a hot meal, a shower and a bed for you and we can stretch it into a longer stay if you feel the urge. Best wishes and Happy Retirement! Gene |

Well, first , let me say Congratulations!...Second, if you are ever in the Northeast Georgia Mountains, (foothills of the Great Smokeys), near Hiawassee...Please let us know.... And finally , thanks for all of your help. Edward |

Congratulations Barney, Your website is an encyclopedia of knowledge. I can't imagine how much work it has been to do that. I especially love the stories, and the way you worked your way through problems. Amazing. If you are ever in the Detroit/ Windsor area look us up at The Windsor-Detroit MG Club www.wdmgc.com Ralph |

Hi Barney. The very best of luck on your exciting retirement adventure and thank you for the guru website without which my project would have been much harder. May I add my voice to Steve and the others, to visit these shores next year for the 60th (by which time I hope to be finished too). Chris. |

I've been rather quite for a few days, so I thought I'd drop a note before going quiet for a few more days. Very busy here, preparing to empty the house this weekend. I also just banged out a dent in the MGA LR fender and repainted it, as well as straightening one trailer fender and repainting both. Nice to get one last hurrah from my workshop before giving it up. Not so nice that it took a few days I didn't really have to spare. MGA laid up Monday through Thursday AM, good to be out for a run today. I rented a 8x20 ft locker (shipping container) to be set up with lots of shelving and nearly all of my tools (for now anyway). I hope most of the larger furniture goes off to a resale shop so I don't have to rent a second locker. Thursday my little trailer (22-cu-ft) and MGA will move several (disassembled) workstation tables to the locker to be stacked for large shelving, also a lot of shelving from the garage, and maybe some stuff that will go on the shelves in storage. Will rent moving truck for Saturday-Sunday, move more stuff to the locker, larger furniture to resale shop, about 1000 pounds of iron and other metals to the junk yard for recycling (and some cash). Truck may also be helping my daughter relocate some stuff to her storage locker. Need to rent a PO Box and forward mail, order cut-off for gas, electric, and the old land line phone. Early Monday morning we're outta here. A day or two later I should have more time check in again after the dust settles. No time to reply individually to all of the well wishers, but I am keeping a spread sheet for all the folks who might like a visit if I travel their way. A few questions have popped up, like no, Arlington VA is not what you might think, just a little business transaction. And no time for a garage sale (unfortunately). One thing I need to mention. Since my MG Tech encyclopedia set (printed) is too large to travel with me, it would like to find a new home. I don't want to put it in storage, because it will begin to go obsolete as soon as I stop printing the updates. This is the printed copy of all 3000+ web pages in the MG Tech section of my web site. It is 15 volumes of 2-1/2-inch D-ring binders, photo here: http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/mg_tech3.jpg (plus two more volumes). It is up to date (current) as of today May 2, 2014. I would sell it now for the cost of the binders alone, about $100, plus cost of shipping (if it needs to be shipped). It will be about 100 pounds in two large boxes (50 pounds each), so estimate shipping cost accordingly. I'm going to miss these books (almost as much as I will miss the workshop). Time for a toast to old friends. |

Barney....now that is a true lifestyle decision. I was recently considering becoming a ' grey nomad' here in Oz. The biggest decision is whether to go clockwise or anticlockwise around Oz. Good luck and keep us advised of your wanderings and experiences. ! |

Barney, Now that we know you are not departing to Arlington permanently but just passing by, maybe you can inquire at the nearby Smithsonian Institution if they are interested in the paper version of the MGA Tech encyclopedia set - it could be billed as the world's biggest, single car model, technical reference! On Friday I got my workstation tables disassembled, moved and set up as shelving in the storage locker, picked up moving boxs from Home Depot, and got cracking with packing. From Saturday AM to Monday AM we rented a nifty Isuzu truck (www.isuzucv.com/images/nseries/slideshow/npr-hd_gas_van.jpg), 16-ft box with lift gate, stubby cab over, Diesel with turbocharger and 5-speed automatic, 250-HP without ever exceeding 3000 rpm. Could put the MGA in this truck with 3-ft to spare (but we didn't). We were hustling like crazy to get everything we wanted out of the house, but this truck was a pleasure to drive. Saturday trip with a stuffed full load of furniture going to a charity based resale shop in Wheaton, Illinois. This could have been better, except they only accepted a bit more than half of the load before discovering that they had run out of floor space in the store. The rest was supposed to go to a nearby charity, but they were not open on weekends. The next step dramatically rubs me the wrong way, but we had to put the rest of the load (including a piano) into the storage locker (thank goodness for the power lift gate). Sunday morning hustle brought a truck load of household goods (other than furniture), and some of the larger shop tools, pedestal grinder, stick welder, gas welder, air compressor, engine stand, etc. into the locker. Sunday afternoon drill had help of several friends disassembling what remained of stuff in the workshop, and another full truck trip to the locker before 7-pm closing with one of the last items in being the roller drawer tool cabinet (for easy access if needed later). The previously mentioned MG Tech encyclopedia set has tentatively been claimed by a few people (in order of request), but with no time for packing and shipping this was also placed in the locker, right in front for easy access, for later shipping (as soon as the opportunity may arise). Then back to the house to assist daughter packing and moving stuff into her storage locker. Sunday night late we loaded the 1965 John Deere garden tractor with defunct engine into the truck along with mower deck, snow thrower and rotor tiller. Also loaded another smaller tiller, a 100-lb steel channel gravel drag, an engine block, a surplus log chain, some worn brake rotors, four batteries, half a dozen defunct generators, some rusty steel shelving and other miscellaneous steel and iron junk. Monday morning off to the junk yard for 8-am opening to dump the stuff. With slightly over 2000 pounds of iron the payoff was $244. Not bad for a side trip when returning the truck to the rental agency. Then back to the house to read the gas and electric meters and grab a copy of latest utility bills. Do a quick final packing of the MGA boot and luggage trailer, save a few trophies, be sure we have the laptop with accessories loaded, help daughter with final loading of her car, and we're out of there for the last time. While daughter runs to storage I run to the the post office to rent a PO box and fill out a forwarding card. Stop at Ace Hardware for duplicate padlock keys, but find no key blanks to match, getting referred to GoldyLocks locksmith(later maybe). Back to locker to help daughter unload. Cell phone calls to cancel land line phone, long distance service, gas and electric service, then to GoldyLocks which happened to be closed when we arrived at 5:03 pm. Oh well, finally end of the day's obligations. Point it north without looking back, with the casual and satisfying thought that FREEDOM DAY is finally here! I suppose I haven't mentioned yet that my son Elliot (24) has decided to accompany me for a while, which hadn't been settled until after my prior message on the 2nd. At 7-pm we roll into the garage of Dave Woerpel just east of Burlington, Wisconsin, as the first stop on the new Grand tour. First order of business here is to drop off a few items for care=taking which we cannot pack along indefinitely while traveling, and which I did not want to bury in the storage locker. The first is one panoramic photo of 103 MGAs (and a few other cars) from NAMGAR GT- 13 in Marietta, Ohio in 1988 (the car's first GT). The second is a silver cup Cecil Kimber Enthusiast Award from MG Drivers Club of North America circa 2007. The third is a framed Mac Spears Founder's Award from NAMGAR circa 2011. Dave Woerpel has agreed to serve as custodian of these items for the indefinite future. Totally fagged out after a week or more of such hectic schedule we all have a late night chat before retiring for the night. Tuesday (after a good night sleep for change) we tackled some problems with Dave's MGA 1500 (not charging). We gave it a minor carburetor tune up first to have good regular idle. Then the twin 6-volt batteries proved good, and generator testing good, so it must be the (new) control box at fault. Never assume anything works just because it may be new. The cut-out relay was not cutting in, and the regulator relay was out of adjustment making about 11 volts only. After some adjustments it was charging properly, so the fix was done, mission accomplished. Time to relax and chat some more, then dinner followed by more chat. Now finally some free time to check email and BBS. For Wednesday afternoon we think we may stay mostly stationary near Burlington, Wisconsin, do a little shopping, maybe freshen up the camping techniques before deciding which way to point the horse on Thursday. Anyone have a late suggestion for southern Wisconsin? If not we may head for Des Plaines, Illinois or Hana, Indiana (two brothers but nothing to do with MGs). Best regards, Barney and Elliot Gaylord 1958 MGA with an attitude (and refreshed wanderlust) http://www/MGAgru.com |

Barney, Wisconsin is a long way from the UK and my geography may be well out. Barney I made the same decision back in 1989, gave up my job, sold the house and all mystuff. The idea was to travel for one year with a motorhome. In the end one year became eight years during which I went to North Africa, South America, Australia and of course many countries in Europe. It was one of the best decisions I ever made! I wish you all the best during your travels and hope it will be a great time! And if you ever end up in Holland, you will be most welcome. Rutger |

Best of luck Barney! As with many others here, my A would probably still be in pieces in the garage if not for your website and your contributions to this BBS. I'm looking forward to hearing of all your new adventures! - Ken |

Time I should file a report here. Monday last I drove up to Burlington, Wisconsin, and stayed with Dave Woerpel for a couple nights, managing to repair and adjust his control box to get the car charging properly. Tuesday night stay over at older brother's place in Des Plaines, Illinois, for party and chat. Wednesday late night to Monday morning stop in Hanna, Indiana, for a visit with brother #2 and a family get together. Lots of interesting vehicles there, but nothing to do with MGs. Monday night camping in New Lenox, Illinois, surviving an sudden rain and wind storm (nothing new). Today I am shipping the printed copy of the MG Tech Library to South Carolina en-route to Germany (stuff gets around). Tonight I wil be attending Chicagoland MG Club's Natter 'n' Noggin North in Schaumburg, Illinois. Having a little more time to rattle around, there could be a couple more local visits somewhere. No definite plans yet where to stay tonight. If nothing else happening in the Northern Illinois area today or tomorrow, then I will likely head east toward Arlington, Virgina, taking a couple days to get there. See you on the road. -- Barney |

Hi Barney, If Wisconsin isn't cold enough for you, you can always make another trip to Alaska! I retired on May 1, and hope I can finally make some more progress on my "A" next winter. We're going to Norway in July, and I'm planning a cross-country trip in my TR8 in the fall. Best wishes to you. Ken |

Just spent a few days cruising down Skyline Drive in VA and the Blue Ridge Parkway in Va and NC. Heading today for Charlotte and Concord, NC, to visit a restoration shop. Then south toward Monks Corner, SC, by Friday. Photos and notes here: http://mgaguru.com/tales/mobile.htm |
Barney Gaylord |
Cruised farther down Blue Ridge Parkway. Fixed a small brake spring problem. Got to Monks Corner. Got my video screen fixed. Heading back north. Spent a fruitless night in Myrtle Beach before blowing out of town. Now sitting in Mar-Mac, ND, spitting distance from Goldsboro. Going almost straight north at a slower pace. Expect to be in Richmond, VA, on Wednesday 5/28 for a small car show and club meeting. Also to visit Bruce Woodson's shop to see what he has in process. |

Another invite for you to enjoy the comfort of a bed shower and great food. This time from Bonnie Scotland should you decide to cross the pond. I would love to do this, but don't have the courage, I am to scared my money would run out. But you have a huge fan club, enjoy it. |

Great to hear about all the changes. Good for you! If you could only come to Japan the, ahem, Austin Healey Club of Japan would love to have you. But if you ever do make it, you will always have a place to stay, food to eat, beer to drink, and lots of old British cars to enjoy. I, as many of us here, really appreciate what you have done for the classic car community. A heartfelt thank you! |

I'm pretty close to east coast of USA at the moment. Can anyone direct me to the road leading to the UK? I think I could get to Malta from there. Things have been flying here. We have driven over 4000 miles in the past 4 weeks, and have visited pretty much everyone on the wish list between Maryland and South Carolina (some more than once). Keep up with our daily travel log here: http://mgaguru.com/tales/mobile.htm Now we are sitting near Frederick, Maryland and we may try to sit still for a day or two. Contemplating moving north into Pennsylvania and farther. We might possibly get well up into Maine, as I came up somewhat short there last time I was in this corner of the country. |
Barney Gaylord |
Hope you are enjoying your adventure in the US. I just noticed that at the top of your postings, it still says Illinois. Well, it is time for you to change that to maybe "Somewhere in the US" or " I'm a wandering man" or "See you soon" or even "I will be coming around the corner when I come". I will now let every one else come up with some other lines to be your new state or "Home". Well, .... my last known address is Illinois, and I still have a PO box there. USPS mail forwarding works, so I can still receive mail through my old address (whenever someone gets around to picking it up). My "local" MG club affiliation is still in Illinois. Since I haven't settled anywhere else yet, I suppose I an still an Illinoisan (if not annoying). |

There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in this from the UK, but for those still watching you can keep up with our trip notes here: http://mgaguru.com/tales/mobile.htm Find some nice car show pictures here: http://mgaguru.com/tales/hellertown.htm |

Hi Barney, Following your travel blog with interest. Difficult to add much comment from the UK as the places and people are unknown to most of us this side of the pond. Regards…John |

Barney, you know what to do...just ship the car and trailer for a jaunt over the Atlantic to the UK...I'm sure you would have plenty of beds, breakfasts and dinners/ales waiting. How about joining the twenty of us Aussies next year (all MGA;s) on our UK/Europe expedition (The Convicts Return). |

Barney, I'm sure most of us are watching, its just that as you know we're all more reserved over here. |

Barney, Ditto John Bray's comments. Have a great time. |

Barney Is it possible for you to create a map of your journeys and upload it. As John indicates we may not be that familiar with all the places you are visiting and it would be fun to follow a map. Since I last dropped a note here and we hardly stop moving. Since June 12th we've gone from Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts (Cape Cod area), Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York (Long Island area), Connecticut, Vermont, and New Hampshire. We have been visiting museums, cars and people, fixing cars as we go, getting into club meetings, tours, parades, car shows, and taking pictures of covered bridges everywhere in the northeast. The New England area is a hoot, but we could do with a little less rain. Still planning on a tour of Maine very soon, if we don't get derailed again. I haven't forgotten about anyone yet (I hope). Still considering the on-line map, if I can figure out how to do it, just haven't found the time to get it done (yet). South Mississippi along the Gulf Coast...best seafood in the USA and a great place to visit. |

Wow. Almost a month passed? The MGA has been running well. We spent some time in Tennessee and Kentucky, then moved up through Indiana, and we have been hanging around the Chicago area for about a week now visiting friends (and family) and still fixing cars as we go. We are now heading to Michigan for the rest of this week, hoping to crash a few car club events and visit some friends and a couple of parts and service vendors. Anyone else in Michigan waiting for a visit by MGA Guru? Next week we will be going down through Ohio and then back south of the Mason-Dixon Line again to take up where we left off in Kentucky and Tennessee, followed by South Carolina (tentatively). All plans are subject to beck and call and which way the wind might blow. See you on the road. |
Barney Gaylord |
Barney, For us guys not so familiar with the US could you post a map that shows your travel route progressively? Mike |
Mike Ellsmore |
That's a good idea, which I have considered, but I haven't figured out how to do it yet. Anyone have suggestions? |
Barney Gaylord |
Barney you could use something like "create a path" in Google Earth - while it would not map the roads it could show your stops - a different colour for eac month. Mike |
Mike Ellsmore |
Barney, The NSA has most likely done all that tracking and mapping work for you! Just make a FOI request and I am sure they will be happy to help. |

I might buy some software to do it, but Google Earth is a no-no. I'm not putting anything on my web site that collects personal information and pushes advertising. |

Hi Barney, If traveling through Kentucky, I recommend US68. It's mostly a two lane historic highway through horse farm country including some challenging switch backs south of Lexington. You are more than welcome to stop by and talk British cars anytime. Thanks again for all you have done supporting the MGA community. Scott Steinhauer Danville, KY 859-325-1428 |
