MG MGA - MGA Licence Plates - any good ones?

I have finally got around to putting personalised licence plates (number plates to us Aussies) on my A. All the good combinations are long gone in Victoria such as MG*1600 and MG*1960 so I have opted for MG*1053 (1053 is the CKD Australian Assembly No for my car - inscribed after the car number on the ID plate). (Cost of these plates here is US$240 a pair, slim line, white on black)
I am interested to see what other combinations you guys have have come up with?

No such thing as a vanity plate here, people just go for the lowest possible number. A friend of mine's grandfather had SZ1, which is probably THE most desire one in the whole country (SZ being the code for the Kanton of Schwyz which is the core of the original confederation).

The tram company here in Zurich poked fun at these in some of its adverts a few years ago - anyone could ride in a low number .... 2 Tram, 31 bus etc.

In the UK the authorities allocate unused age -related numbers, normally from Scottish counties, (typically a number stays with a car all its life), so mine was JSK921, which got the car the nickname Jessica (no longer used).

Good topic.

Can I hijack it...

Anyone heard of any other UK MGA's or other cars registered by the factory near abingdon with the licese plate beginning with the code

PJB.

I have PJB 1 4 7 so need to find what date that was issued, so sourounding numbers may help.

Works rally car is MJB191.

Cheers Mark.

Oh person next door in London has P1... suppose to be worth over £30,000.

Here in Canada, A pair of well known (stereotypical beer drinking) TV comedians known as "Bob and Doug McKenzie" coined the term "eh." The term "eh" was constantly used during the duo's comedy interactions. The term "eh" is now a Canadian household "icon" and is now also indelibly associated and linked with Canadians. So much so that a few years ago, I saw an MGA bearing this license:
AN MG EH I dont know who owns the vehicle, but had to chuckle at the license! Cheers, Glenn

About a year ago, I filled out my aplication for the the plate TLY HO.Utah only allows 5 characters on vintage plates and I had filled out the application but hadn't submitted it.
A fellow MGA'er friend met us for lunch one afternoon just as the process was going on and he mentioned during lunch that he had just submitted his to the state. I asked him what he was going to put on, to which he responded TLY HO. It was weird, I had never talked to him about my idea and he had the same one. Unfortunately, he got the plate.
I am now submitting mine and am going with TEA-4-2.

How about GR8MGA?

Mine is a CA plate- 59 MGA
I just got lucky, I can't explain it any other way.

Mine's a CA vanity plate, which I got after a particularly frustrating series of mechanical and electrical problems 13 years ago: MTBF1WK

This is the link to VicRoads where you can design your own plates here in Victoria, Australia.

According to my data PJB (the last 2 letters - JB) was a Reading registration plate - not that close to Abingdon. Oxford, adjacent to Abingdon would have been the nearest registration authority. It had a number of letters allocated to it including JO, UD,BW,FC and WL.

Remember that Abingdon only made the cars, they would not normally register them, that was a task for the local dealers.

I stand slightly corrected. JB was Berkshire until 1974, then Reading.

Can't wait to use it!

Randy,

My North Carolina plate is '59 MGA. I saw several from other states that were about the same at MG 2006.

EVIL CAM, Evil twin was taken. So using a label maker I've put twin in. So no its EVIL twin CAM. The english plate was RRV 666, the body number has three 6's.
D.M. Black

My plate number is "1956 MGA". I can't believe it wasn't already taken. Even stranger is that I still regularly get people asking me what year my car is. Go figure!
Andy Bounsall

Hey Andy,

Are you bringing your '56 to Whistler next July to play with my '56 (OEW)?

Check out www.GT32.com
P. Tilbury

My plates are "1600MKI" and "SAFETFAST" (limited to 9 characters).

I also have a '54 Wolseley 4/44 with standard issue plates of "XYZ 444". I think the previous owner had a few connections in the licensing dept!

Thanks Steve,

PJB is a prototype Twin Cam, so registered by the factory themselves.

I've seen those files before on how registration numbers were made up.

I'm sure some other MG's were registered in the Abingdon area, just need to find one of their numbers.

My brother has SAFTYFAST on his MKII racer....

Yes I know spelt wrong but only a max of 9 characters were allowed in Perth

Cheers

Mark Lambert; "Mean Time Between Failure 1 Week", that's pretty good....!

I owned a 60 Iris blue MK1 that I had done a frame off restoration on. When a freind saw it he gave me an old Kansas plate. The plate color was blue and said TOPLESS, matched the car perfectly. Car was not registered that way but wore the plate at car shows.

It gets a lot of laughs at stoplights from engineering types...

Thanks for that, George. i was noodling over that one and was stuck in the gutter. Can't print what my interpretation was!

Cheers,

I don't have personalized plates but I do have period-correct 1958 California plates. Now for the extremely lucky part... the plate number is "MGA 704"! Here's a photo: http://www.mgnuts.com/temp/mgaplate.jpg

I have MG5 on my 1958 Roadster. I had to order it from the vehicle registration centre in the days before personalised plates and had to wait about 5 years for it. It was the only single digit number available at the time.
Dave Barron

Hey Peter, my '56 is also OEW. Don't think I'll make it to GT32 unfortunately. Same country, but oh so far away!
Andy Bounsall

Our '62 OEW Roadster has the NY plate "MGA MK2". Saw the same plate at MG2006 in Gatlinburg from Indiana.

Mine is MG EH 57, and people ask me what year it is also although maybe it is not as clear as 1956 MGA. (57 MG EH was already taken)

Hopefully I will pick up my new plates for my Mk11 today. They are MGA 262. Being a Mk11 made in 1962.
These are the slim black and white plates unlike the old yellow ones that got caught on gutters if left on the front. I've had mine front plate in the boot for a couple of years with one bolt in and a story to tell the police how it just fell off.

I had wanted the obvious 60 MGA but it was gone along with most of the other good variations. I decided on MGA ONE and I have to say that I have become quite fond of it!

Steve, don't you mean you have 1956 yellow plates with a 58 sticker on it. I have never heard of a 58 plate. Is there going to be a run on Labor Day.?

Mr Morris the Cat (very picky)
JEFF BECKER

Something different......I have RIP on my 1961 MGA. "Retire In Peace", according to my oldest son!!!
DR MGA is still availible in Queensland!
Dave
David Godwin

Jeff, yes that's what I meant. Yellow/black plates were used from '56-62 and all years except '56 required a year sticker. I have the plate with the '58 sticker hagning safely in my garage, and placed the current sticker on the other plate which is on the car.

I've been so busy I keep forgetting about Labor Day. I'll get on it!

When Ontario ran out of the usual 6 number variations a few years back they extended the spaces to 8. I went to the licensing office shortly thereafter and was able to snag [MGA 1600] complete with the space for my 1960 Roadster. It now sits in my garage alongside a poster size digital scan of the unfolded dealer brochure from 1960 and the car pictured is sporting a British license plate rendering with the plate number [MGA 1600].

Glen, when we named our car club we took the Bob & Doug MacKenzie theme to heart. We're a Canadian club dedicated to the MGA & a local Chapter of NAMGAR ... so .. The Southwestern Ontario Hoser Eh's .. were born !!
