MG MGA - MGA oil filter element

Hi,

I will very soon be changing the engine oil in my A. Naturally the oil filter will also be replaced. My question is do I fit a modern paper cartridge or is it better to fit a OE replacement felt filter. I believe that the factory fitted the felt cartridge. I have a new old stock felt cartridge on the shelf, and unless it will restrict the flow of oil, thus causing low oil pressure, I am tempted to make use of it at the next oil change.
Kindly asking your advice. Thanks.

The factory used felt filters because that was the way things were done back then. I'd think that if your car lasted 50+ years on felt catridges, then I'd go ahead and use it up before making any switch. The felt filter arrangement sure is messy though and you'd only be saving a few bucks by not changing over to a paper cartridge at the next change.

Do what you feel like, there is no one answer.

Thanks Chuck. The filter I have is a NOS original filter. I will use it at the next oil change, and, as you said, thereafter, I will go for the modern paper style .

I always get the felt type filters as I thought they were better (they are cost a little more, but are still cheap). Is there a general consensus that the paper filters are better?

Also am I the only person that doesn't have any problem or issues with the old cannister set up?

Neil, I also have no problems when changing the oil filter in the old canister set up. It just takes a little patience & good access from underneath the car. I also manage to fill the canister with oil prior to refitting, something that not all people do. I must confess that I do not always change the upper o-ring as is recommended.

All my replacement filters have been paper – remember reading a thread that someone had a felt filter that disintegrated & destroyed the engine.
