MG MGA - mga on ebay

Hi all just thinking about going back into MGA ownership having sold my coupe last year and I wondered if anyone knew or could make a comment on one of the A's on ebay at the moment it is a red roadster for sale in Bude Cornwall for a buy now price of £12000 any comments or thoughts would be gratefully recieved

I presume you mean this one.

Looks a solid car. The seller is wrong to describe it as "exactly as it rolled off the production line in 1959" as there are a number of incorrect details. However most of these are cosmetic and easily sorted.

For me, I would be concerned about the number plate and would want to be assured that I could get an age related plate from the DVLA.

I am guessing that the price is about right for a dealer car, but his comment about £18000 cars would only be for twin cams. For the price he is asking you will find any number of private sales.

Hi Steve thanks for that which bits don'y look correct

Not that it should reflect on the price, and if it was nearer I would view the car, but is this or is it not the car available for hire by West Country Classics. Search for website.

thanks for info you are quite right it is part of a fleet of classics for hire, hope it hasn't been thrashed as a result by careless hirers

I was not wanting to make an issue of the small detail as we have had these discussions before about criticising cars on Ebay. However, in this case the seller said it was exactly as rolled off the production line.

A few obvious items in the engine compartment:

Non-armoured fuel line to rear carb.
Incorrectly routed copper heater pipe.
Rocker cover not painted.
Wrong colour bonnet stay.

As I said, minor details that can be easily sorted, but not as stated to be 'off the production line'.

A friend of mine is selling his MGA that he has owned for 13 years due to ill health. It is one of the finest MGAs that you will ever see. The one drawback for you is that he lives in Halifax but if you are serious about owning a car like this then that should not be too much of a problem. If you think you might be interested then let me know and I will pass your details on to him.

Hi Gordon, Nice looking car and probably worth somewhere between £10K and £12K - but obviously not perfect. The chrome rocker cover was an optional extra in the 60s - which mine also has. Go and see it and offer him £9k and work from there - or travel up to Halifax and see Phil's friends car - good luck

Hi all many thanks for your comments, Phil do you know how much your friend will be looking for his A,

What is the correct color for the bonnet stay?
(gloss or semi-gloss black?)

Same color for the boot (trunk) stay?

It looks ok at the first glance - but there is one thing I would pay an extra attention.

If you see the picture of the passenger door, you can see that the panel under the door is curved down a bit - it indicate a very bad repair and a costly rerepair - I would take a very close look
