MG MGA - MGA Reference Library

Am starting to commence to begin the restoration of my '58 MGA. The beast is new to me and am starting from zero. Would like to have a reference library to use during the project. Would appreciate suggestions and recommendations for classic and current texts, and where to easily find them. This is probably an often repeated query, but I hate reinventing the wheel. :-) Thanks for the help.

1. A factory parts list (for the diagrams)
2. A factory workshop manual
3. A Haynes manual (sometimes much clearer explanations than the factory manual)
4. Original MGA Claushager (for the details and the pictures) and a beatiful book in its own right
5. MGAguru.com (Barney;s site is better than most other books because of the detailed step by step instructions, and it's VERY comprehensive
6. This BBS will answer almost anything
7. Moss parts catalogue or similar
8. Todd Clarke's restoration guide
9. Andy Sargent's restoration guides (from MGA Register)
10 For the speed merchants: Series A and Magnette Tuning and Maintenance by Philip Smith for getting the most out of the power plant while staying "original"

This will cover absolutely anything cosmetic and mechanical.

Where are you in CA? Other than Dominic's excellent list, there are most likely other enthusiasts near you who can offer advise and a fully restored car which you can use as reference.

Nice list, Domenic. I'll only add Victoria Britiah and Abingdon Spares catalogs. I assume Domenic is refering to the Moss UK catalog. They're handy (and different to the Moss US catalog) and can be ordered from Moss.

I would add that the reprinted newsletters from the MGAntics club in Michigan is a nice thing to have -- good bedtime reading, and some good nuggets of information in there. I can't remember where I got my copy, though I think they can still be ordered.

A good book on MIG welding and hammer and dolly work is a bonus, too..."Pro Paint and Body" is one that I picked up recently...

Check out the Eclectic Motorworks web site as well...good information (pics) there to reference.

I'll second the plug for Barney's site -- awesome.

I would say in addition to the above excellent list--

Peter Burgess: How to Power Tune the MGB Four Cylinder engine. Most is applicable to the MGA engine.

Malcome Green's book on MGA restoration is good for chasis work and some other info.

I would like to add "Tech Sessions from MGA!" a very excellent compilation of technical articles written and edited by Mike Ash from NAMGAR. "MGA, The Complete Story" by David G. Styles (Crowood Press) is a worthy addition as well. You may also consider the "How To" series (Repair and Restore Body work, Paint Your Car and Restore Auto upholstery) from Motorbooks International.

You must add Barney Gaylord to your list. His web site is a must- mgaguru.com.

I've got an old Clymer's MGA manual that I use a lot as well as the above mentioned.
