MG MGA - MGA Roll barMGA Roll bar

I'd like to put a single loop roll bar in my 60 MGA, and was wondering if anyone had any sources of pictures that I could use for reference. Alternatively, is anyone aware of anyone who sells them?

Thanks, John

What, don't think the windshield frame will save you? 8^P

I built my own and attached it to the chassis the same way a Mk11 attaches the seatbelt brackets, steel brackets welded to the chassis. Mine is bolted to these brackets with high tensile bolts, so it can be removed if needed. I made it to just fit under the hardtop and hood. I have also cut a slot in the bar, at the back and mounted an LED stop light strip inside and sealed it flush with silicone. The wire is threaded down through the pipe and out a tiny hole and on to the stop light loom connection at the back. It is very effective and even the 4WD bully boys tailgating can see them! Can email photos if required.

Barry, can I also have a photo – Thanks.
I have been looking for a roll bar for some time, but can’t find any if I still want to use the hood.
I would like to participate in hill climb and other light motor sports and social events for historic cars.
I am looking for an approved safety roll over bar, but I can’t find any if I still want to use the hood.
Safety Device http://www.safetydevices.com is selling one, but only for the coupe (and it is not FIA homologated).
I will be OK if I had to detach the hood frame and then use the roll over bar as a sort of frame.
It is essential to have the possibility to still use the hood one way or another, - the car is also used for weekends, holydays and vacations.

Tom:

Ted Schumacher at MGA/MGB/GT Performance Parts
answered my e-mail and said to call him at 1-800-543-6648 with shipping and credit card details as he does the MGA roll bars on a "per order" basis. He makes a full width bar with two rear braces that attach to the inner body. The standard roll bar allows the top to be put up per his web site (see below). He also makes a MGA racing roll bar.

Trever,
Do you have any pictures of your windscreen? I also built one from a cut-down stock frame.

Hi Folks. When I bought my 1500 roadster back in 1980, it came with a home made roll bar. Short chunks of three inch diameter pipe pieces were welded onto the large tube located under the battery hatch. The Roll bar was apparently bent at a muffler shop, and it's tubing diameter was sized to be a tight slip fit into the short pipe "stubs" The stubs and roll bar were both cross drilled to accept through bolts. I didnt like the look of the roll bar, and removed it. But for anyone willing to do a bit of scrounging, welding and fabricating, a home brew roll bar is not out of the question. Cheers, Glenn

Roll bars are for bling. Cars look silly with one and they just punch through the back in a roll over. Kind of a dumb thing to do really but each his own.

Steve, I can't believe you said that!!! Why do you think the folk who control motor sport around the World require a rollbar, otherwise you can't compete? I very soon constructed mine when a 40 foot sea container on a truck nearly landed on top of me while rounding a corner. It would have squashed me flat if it had tipped!! The bar I have made would not buckle and would transfer the load to the chassis. I may be trapped - but still alive!! I figure the rollbar is an essential piece of safety equipment on my everyday driver. I could not ever say anyone elses ideas were "dumb" but as you say "each to his own".
Barry.

Seems that a lot of 'show' bars over the years have given true roll bars a bad name. A properly installed roll bar will protect the occupants in the event of a roll over accident. Of course nothing is perfect, there are no garantees, but I'd rather have one than not in an open car. The roll bar in my midget is built to SCCA specs except for the height. Thick wall mild steel tubing, not muffler pipe, and good 1/4" mounting plates sandwiched on either side of the sheet metal. All grade 8 bolts. It's got to be better than nothing at all. Yes, I installed it partly to add to the competition look I wanted for the car, but also for safety. I plan on doing the same in my MGA but with a more period single hoop just behind the driver's head. I plan on a bolt in bar, so one for the passenger can be added if needed. I very rarely have any passengers anyway.
Thanks for the photos Barry, wish it showed the frame attachment better.
