MG MGA - MGA Supercharger
Does anyone have any experience with the Supercharger that Moss sells. I am considering it. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks. |

Contact Carl Heidelman in Mich, he has done dyno tests on this unit and can tell you what it will put out. His number is in the archives. His company is Electric Motors...This is a close spelling but it is wrong. |

Dan, successfully added the supercharger to my 1600 roadster two years ago. Had some difficulty with the carb set up but was resolved with the help of Kevin Dodd at Moss. The car is far more drivable now than ever before, probably expienced a 25% of better power gain. Climbing hills is now easy, rolling starts in 2nd easy. sounds great, looks great, feels great. It is fairly straightforward but time consuming job, replacing motor mounts and main pully can be difficult in the garage without a lift and all of the tools avialable in a shop. The main problem is limited space to work, I am still considering cutting a panel though the left fender wall. If the car had that, then tightening the lower manifold bolts would have been simple as well as connecting the choke cable. As it is, space is very limited. The unit really fills up the left side. get engine paint and do it up right. also, get the heat shield as well as alternator conversion. good luck and enjoy. Ted |

My comment about engine paint is for the engine and brackets that come with the kit. The supercharge is beautiful as it comes, silver and chrome. As long as the whole front end is apart, radiator out, carbs off, manifold off, generator/alternator removed, now is good time to paint and polish! Replacing the water pump is a good idea, repaint fan blades. Once its back together, painting will be too late. Ted |

Dan, We installed a Moss unit for a 1965 5 main motor onto a 3 main MGB motor into a 1957 MGA. Very nice results and fun car! The owner likes it and the car keeps up with traffic pretty well too. When doing this, the vehicle was completely restored and the motor was designed to take the S.C. Also, like others have mentioned, Carl knows his stuff and was able to give us a few pointers. We ended up building a motor with lower compression and will eventually boost the motor with a different pulley. -BMC. |

Just finished the install. Decided it was a good time to do a total engine rebuild, which included flowing, porting and polishing the head. Standard comp ratio but balanced major parts and slightly lightened the flywheel. The install itself is, as has been mentioned quite easy but does take more time than Moss indicates. Most of the issues are things like having to get into very small areas with a spanner! They supply everything you will need which also includes new throttle and choke cables. I highly recommend the heat shield and I too had big issues with the carb. Luckily I live quite near a bloke called John Watts of LNER in Newmarket, Ont. who is a retired RAF mechanic and now rebuilds some serious vehicles. He figured out the vacuum issue that was shutting down the engine and I have taken it for it’s second outing today. One thing I will be getting to the bottom of is that I also bought the recommended distributor. John recons it has the wrong curve so we will be taking a look at that later this week. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I took their advice and went with the alternator conversion with the obvious change to negative ground. This was very easy. One consideration was pointed out by my wife… I sold her on the idea that my carbs were shot and that rather than put the money into rebuilding or replacing them I may as well drop $3k into the supercharger… wait for scream… continue, well it is a lot of money but think of the benefit… Well, obviously I got away with it but then the mastercard came in and with all the other recommended bits – distributor, alternator, etc, etc it blew the $3k out of the water and she blew my eardrums along with it! She will never find out how much the engine rebuild cost! The little I have driven the car has put a huge smile on my face! It is much more drivable and it was quite good to start with. The extra torque is delivered smoothly and gives the car very long legs. It makes me want to go with the 5 gear conversion but that might be pushing it… For me that might be changing too much (Hmm, then again!). If you are okay with it being a big move from original then I say go for it! Roy. |
