MG MGA - MGA Title Wanted

Gentlemen:
I know that some feel this is illegal--but I know it is not--at least not in my home state of Wisconsin. I am searching for a title for a 1500 MGA and am willing to pay for it. Preference would be a title with the prefix HDA. It would help if the VIN plate would go with the title. REASON: My very first car was a 1958 MGA 1500 black with red interior. I am getting nostalgic in my advanced years (I turned 60 recently) and wish to reclaim my youth by recreating my first car in as much detail as possible. While this is not an ablsolute necessity it would be nice if I could find a title. So, if anyone out there has or knows of a 1500 title with the prefix HDA, I would be most apprectiative. Thank you.

I don't have an unused title, but I do have a '58 roadster (HDA43/31482) apparently originally black with red interior, now OE White with red interior. The chassis plate shows only "H31482" and the engine plate is gone. The car was apparently redone (engine rebuild, upholstery kit, new rockers, repaint) in the early to mid-90's. It had been in TN for 10 years when I bought it a year ago. It had a '93 Missouri inspection sticker on it when I got it. The car still runs great and looks good.I would be interested in any history on this car if any forum participant knows anything about the car.

This may help.

The Broadway Title Folks do essentially what can be done here in WI. If you have a Vin number you can apply for a replacement title to a vehicle. I could actually use any VIN as long as it wasn't issued previously in WI and get a replacement title. This wouldn't be a problem ever until a vehicle with the same VIN applied for title. If I had the old VIN to my original MGA which was salvaged in 1966 after an accident, I could use that number to get a replacement title. That car was disassembled for parts and probably the title was just thrown out. Now if I could just remember that number......

James - Good luck with your project - good to hear that there will be another black MGA with red interior - which is what I have although a 1960 1600 cheers Cam

That's the trick, finding a number that's from a car that is confirmed "gone" forever! Maybe someone else scrapped a car in the dim, dark past but still remembers the number even if they've no plate or title. Now if only I had some success locating and reading the mythical numbers stamped on frames, I could offer one of the numbers stamped on my spare frames. Of course even then, the VIN number and plate might have gone on to re-body another frame, so even that wouldn't be foolproof.

Reminds me of when we lived in MT. At that time MT was pretty sloppy with titles. Grandpa had the farm auction and cleaned out the shelterbelt of relics. Someone bought a late 40's Chevy without a title for a hot rod. Applied for a lost title and got it and the car was finished. Around a decade later grandson used an old title found in Grandpa's estate to title a late 40's Chevy hot rod he had just completed from parts. Fortunately both parties and the state recognized what had happened and all turned out well.

I have been succesful with titling a couple of Model A Fords without titles but it is a long and bureaucratic process. I view cars without titles as parts cars only. If you can find a VIN and title - go for it, but be careful. Most states have been burned with titles from crushed cars winding up on stolen cars and retitling can be arduous.

You might contact NAMGAR. I believe that their registry includes cars that have been scrapped by the owners for various reasons. They might know of an available title/VIN plate.
