MG MGA - MGA Twin Cam cross member
I'm usually over on the TD forum, however, my brother is rebuilding a Twin Cam and is putting in the engine in about 3 weeks... he is stripping the frame and found a chassis member that is toast... "I need help getting the tubular frame/chassis member that goes across the chassis between the engine and transmission - it is the only tubular member in the front of the car. Mine is so far gone that it is no sense to try and salvage it." Not sure if this is a normal MGA part, but any help would be appreciated.... email me direct gordon

Gordon, check out the website for Eclectic Motor Works. http://www.eclecticmotorworks.com/ They show the repair of this crossmember in some detail which might help. |

There is a standard size of exhaust tubing that works well for this. If you need more than the straight section and you can find a shop that still does bending, they can make one up, using the old one as a pattern. Years ago a local Midas shop made me one at no charge.

It is 2" OD x 16g tubing. I had to replace a dented section in mine and found the exact fit from a mountain bike frame from the local dump! But no bending.

Barney Gaylord's site describes a process where you drill and tap a small hole into the member. Since it is closed in on both sides air pressure will remain when pumped in. Then heat the area of distortion until red and work it back to round with channel locks. I am about to try this on mine in a few weeks and am anxious to see how it does. Mine is in real bad shape so the results should be telling. I will post when it is done.

Ken, When you work with channel locks, be careful that you don't over pinch the metal. Been there, done that, but not on my A.

Thanks again... he found an actual cross member. This was the car last year when purchased... http://vaxxine.com/gblawson/tc/tc.eht (the .eht might be a problem with some browsers, am slowly getting pages back to .htm)
