MG MGA - MGA Wiper Motor with 130° Wheel
When I restored my Coupe, I restored the original wiper motor to use in the car. Took it completely apart and Barney even posted pictures of all of the parts along with my explanation of how it came apart and went back together. https://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et217a.htm
As you can see in the pictures, the wheel in my original wiper motor is a 130° wheel rather than 120°. I thought this wiper motor was original to my car but it seems more likely that it was a Magnette wiper motor transplanted into my Coupe by a previous owner. When I completed the restoration of the car, the first time I had to use the wipers, there seemed to be too much drag or friction from the wiper blades and the wipers would not work. If I lifted the arms off of the windscreen, they would turn but there was not enough power to turn them when placed back on the windscreen. I located another original wiper motor, restored it and installed it in my Coupe. This motor had a 120° wheel. When I removed my original to install the 120° wiper motor, I discovered that the long drive gear of my original was in a bind and that was probably the reason the original motor did not work. I had everything apart and had restored the 120° motor so I thought I might as well install it. The results were better but the sweep of the wipers was marginal at best, barely more than 90 degrees. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to put my original wiper motor back in my car. I was determined to do this without having to drop the pedals or move the master cylinder and I was successful!! It was a PITA to do but better than removing the pedal assembly and loosening the master cylinder. As you can see in the video, the sweep is much better and I am please to have the original wiper motor back in my Coupe. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lZE0CwZhtQI Jim |
