MG MGA - MGA won't shift
My '58 1500 will not shift. I can shift into every gear when the engine is not running but w the engine on, the shifter grinds and will not go into gear. I have had problems w air n the clutch line, but even when it s pumped up w pressure it still will not shift if the engine is running. |

What happens if you select a gear, then start the motor? Can you then drive and change? Sounds like the clutch is not disengaging. |

Hi Sounds like the plate is stuck to the flywheel. Have you not used the car for a while and/or has there been high humidity or a lot of rain causing srface rust on the clutch. Freeing is fairly straightforward by each persons favourite method do a search. Hope it's something simple Barry |

Is this something that has happened suddenly or has the car gradually been getting harder to shift over time to the point that it is no longer possible? The suggestions a re good, but check too that the clutch fork at the slave cylinder is moving. I have had experience of the master cylinder seals leaking internally, such that the pedal doesn't build enough pressure to operate the clutch. The secondary seal keeps the fluid contained, so there is no external sign of a leak. |
