MG MGA - MGA Xmission Question

Hello all. I am about to (re)start an MGA restoration. I bought my MGA project car about twenty years ago and about ten years ago completely disassembled it (body off) and took the engine out and transmission off. Now after 10 years I am going to try to put all the pieces back together. (I have completely forgotten how it came apart).
Anyway I'm going to start by putting the engine and transmission back together and on to the frame and I have two questions. (1) The inside of the transmission seems to be more greasy and dirtier than I would have expected. Are transmission housings always very dirty or do I probably need to replace the input shaft seal (Moss 120-300) and if so is it easy to replace? (2) Is there a gasket between the engine and the transmission bell housing? I can't find on in the catalog. Thanks for any assistance. I found this site very invaluable when I restored my TD 25 years ago.

Inside of tunnels do tend to be a bit messy. There isnt a gasket between engine and gearbox just metal to metal.

Joe, here's a link to Barney's site which details the reassembly sequence in a "body off" situation:

....and here's the body re-installation process:

Barney's site has a wealth of information regarding everything associated with the repair & maintenance of these cars; not sure if you were familiar with it.

Good luck with the restoration.......

Thank you for the links to these two wonderful sites. This is exactly what I needed!!

I would strongly suggest replacing every single seal and gasket - after such a long layup they will all be hard and will leak like the Exxon Valdez if you leave them as they are. It's easy to replace the seals now, and you will regret it big time later if you leave them unchanged.

This applies to seals on the gearbox input, speedo takeoff, rev counter takeoff, rear and front hubs, crankshaft pulley, rear axle input flange. Paper gaskets are less critical, but replace them of you have to separate the mating services
