MG MGA - MGA's surviving

It's well documented that around 101,000 MGA's were made, but a question I've been asked several times is - 'How many have survived?'. Has anybody got any idea how many there are - both here in UK, and around the world?

One of our club members (www.westlancsmg.co.uk) has an mga twin cam and reckons his is one of only 20 on the road in UK. The numbers of MGAs on the road in UK must be increasing all the time because of re-imports but my understanding is that only around 6 - 7000 were originally sold in UK - probably about half of those still exist. Cheers Cam ( mine is a European reimport - 1600 not twin)

I'd be VERY suprised if there were only 20 TC cars on the road in the UK, there were more than a few at the 50th in Silverstone last year as racers....

Hi again, Dominic - I think my Twin cam colleague was referring to cars actually on the road - i.e. road legal and so not counting out and out track racers. I also know that quite a few so called twin cams are now fitted with standard B series engines so are not twin cams any more. How many track racer twin cams were there at Silverstone Dominic? Cheers Cam

Dave,

I've often wondered this too - just how many As are there still in existence. It would be interesting if the various Registers in different countries got together and cross-referenced their lists, which might give the (more or less) definitive answer.

Out of interest, how many of us have registered our As with a Register? Is it something people do as a matter of course?

Just had a quick trawl of the various register sites I could find. Each of them gives the number of cars registered with their particular organisation:

MGA Register (UK) - 2,500
Holland - 2,360 (although quite a few are deemed 'inactive', ie. dead)
NAMGAR - 6,500
Victoria, Australia - 100

TOTAL - 11,460

Assuming there are some duplicates, and that there are plenty that are not registered here, it's hard to extrapolate much from this figure, but there are quite a few!

You can add 5 to that number, if you want to include mine. Or 7 if you count bare frames. Sadly, that would be 1 "active", 6 "inactive"!

That's quite a stable Derek! If they were children, you'd probably qualify for tax relief.

13..of sorts..here.

My neighbours would probably prefer a stable. It might smell a bit more, though.

Richard - If Derek's cars were children - social services would have taken them due to neglect!! Cheers Cam

I own a U.K. Twin Cam [YD1 2388] and I asked the Holland Register a few months back - 'how many Twin Cams are there ? And the reply was 37.

FYI

Yahoo Twin Cam group stands at 300 plus members with Twin Cams and over 50 with Deluxes.

Many more are known to be surviving but owners are either not on email or don't wish to participate.

Best place to look for those hard to find parts and some members have even started makeing the odd part.

Not sure how many the Holland register shows here:

As the Web makes its way into every home, survivers will turn up all the time.

If you remember an old MGA you once had and can still remember the number plate (UK Only) type it in here and see if it still survives !!!

Shame the same does not exist for the US. One day they may go national.

Cheers
Mark.

499 & 801 !!!

Not likley to go national as the fees now go to the counties not the states. Colorado purges all title records after 10 years of no activity. The old titles I have are the only records of the cars anywhere for my 3 unliscenced MGAs. Some states don't even use titles for cars over 10 years old.

For the Twin Cam collectors, H&H auctions (http://www.classic-auctions.co.uk/) have an original UK 1959 one for sale at their September auction.

That link to the DVLA that Mark gave above doesn't work for me. Anyone else got one that works?

I want to see if the car I learned to drive in (VLF759G, 1968 Sunbeam Stiletto) still exists. Also, 2 other early acquisitions that I wish I still had:- MOO375, 1962 Mk1 midget & 1187CR, 1959 Riley 1.5.

I've just tried it using the name I had bookmarked which did work. It's not working now so I assume the site is down. I just get a stream of HTML.

My bookmark agrees with Mark's link.
