MG MGA - MGATwin Cam replica

On ebay it reads "if you are a MGA purist - then please do not read any further as you will only upset yourself !" Some replica

Looks might nice to me. I wonder if the alloy & f/g body goes beyond the standard alloy bit plus f/g wings and valances?

Derek Nicholson

Very cool! It certainly looks well done.
The seats and the road wheels are super.

Well, I suppose, speaking metaphysically, it *occupies the same space* as an MGA.

You Washington State guys crack me up!

I think that the MGA's profile is enhanced by silver - gives the car an ageless look. Although my car is currently BRG (other thread), Silver is on my short list for the next rebuild. I believe it was Steve Simmons who posted some very nice silver MGA piccies last year.

Steve Gyles

Anyone remember the silver, Rover V8 powered MGA that was in Thoroughbred & Classics or Classic & Sports Car a few years back?

And imagine this in silver (or any other colour, for that matter)!

Derek Nicholson

Did you notice that the seat backs appear to be interchanged, ie, the left is on the right, and vica versa?
P. Tilbury

Derek,
That Silver v8 car was awsome looking. I took pictures of it at Brands or Silverstone one year at an MG's on track day.. it rained that day and that thing was very slow... Perhaps the owner did not want to scratch it... I think it was for sale at the time...

Anyway back to the MX5 car.... As loads of people say the MX5 should have been the MGF, which is a horrible thing in my opinion... but my early MX5 is so much fun, even after 10 years.... Once its worth nothing, I'd consider using the running gear. such a smooth little motor...

Cheers Mark.

Want a laugh, the winning bidder pulled out because the car did not have door locks.
Dave Swinburne

Sounds like the kind of bidder that every E-Bay seller dreads.
Nothing like having a clue what you are bidding on!

Wow, this guy's got some nice toys. A far cry from the last Vauxhall imported into North America!

And he's got a classified for the 'A for 8500 Pounds:-

Funny that eBay doesn't offer the "Classified" feature over here.

Drool!!!

I am going to drive up there this weekend and take a look - if it is that good, my buy her !!

Hi to all !

Thanks for the kind words and comments.

An American member here emailed me and told me that it was being discussed on this forum - to be honest I expected to see lots of "that is just not right" kind of comments !

She is the 3rd MGA I have had and to me the most usable best looking and fun.

eBay is good to reach lots of people but unfortunately it would seem that is not always such a good thing (hence the "what no door locks ?" gentleman !)

Apart from a guy in Germany nobody really appears to be that serious about buying her and to be honest, although some people have been genuine I am now tiring a little of answering emails and then arranging viewing etc, taking people out for a drive etc only to be told "hmm I will think about it", I had one guy with "oh I did not realise that there were no side windows !"

I suspect I may well regret selling her once she is gone and so I may again offer her to my parents (free of charge) to have on long term loan to use and enjoy. That way I gain some space and still have contact with her.
My father is reluctant as he "would hate for it to get scratched" - "I would feel awful if somebody damaged it whilst I had it" etc etc !

Anyway enough of my rambling (thanks for listening !).

Thanks again for the kind words - all the best,
Steve

Well, it's good to see that you took the time to search out the BBS and participate.

Of course I'm the "American" that Steve refers to. Canadian, actually, but what the heck, we're all Colonials anyway.

Steve was kind enough to send an answer via eBay concerning the spinners.

****************************************************

Hi Derek,

Thanks for the email.

I do not have any close up photos at present but will take some at the weekend when it is light enough in the evening.

To describe them - they are very simple - the spinners are actually very heavy duty GRP which are moulded to their own back plates. This back plate has the 4 cut outs for the wheel bolts and is merely held in place by 2 smallish cap headed bolts.

You could do the same with steel / chrome spinners really but the additional weight would require heavier duty fixings.

Hope this helps for now.
All the best

Steve

So, I was very surprised that they're GRP! They sure don't look like it in the photos, anyway.

Thanks again for taking the time to fill us in, Steve. And don't be a total stranger to the board. Especially if you keep the car. I'd love to buy it but the budget doesn't permit.

Hi Derek,

What a plank I am - my sincere apologies - CANADIAN !!

Strangely enough, I am currently thinking of making next year's holiday a long desired trip to the Rockies !

I will get some close up photos to you this week, or even better if I get time I will take one off and then take photos from different angles - quite a simple design.

All the best to you all

Steve

Now that we have got you on this forum how about a picture of you and the car for our MGA photo gallery run by Serge over in Belgium - see here: http://www2.mgcars.org.uk/cgi-bin/gen5?runprog=mgbbs&mode=thread&access=&subject=6&source=T&thread=2006090116291815979

As I mentioned in my post above, I do like the car in silver. Do you get many comments on this colour scheme?

Steve
Steve Gyles

Don't worry, Steve, Canadians are used to it. We're sort-of "American Lights"!

Unfortunately, the Rockies are rather far away. Though Canada fits on 1 page in the World Atlas, just like Britain, the scale is a bit different. From me (Lachute, Quebec) to Banff, Alberta is 2200+ miles. A bit more than a day trip, unfortunately! If you do end up somewhere near Montreal, I'll gladly put you up for the night.

Hi Derek - a very kind offer indeed - many thanks !

Hi Steve - I will sort a photo out at the weekend. Thanks for the kind words on the colour - I am very fond of it myself, I have previously had MGA's in Red, (which I changed to BRG) and also OEW but my favourite has been this one.

As for comments - oh the car certainly gets comments - and not just on the colour !!

I'll share this one with you too...........a gentleman called me last night to enquire about buying my car. His opening remark was..."I am calling about your Mickey Mouse MGA"............not the best of starts but I did have to laugh about it later - it takes all sorts I suppose...
Steve Owen

Steve, since we seem to have successfully sucked you into the BBS world, maybe you could fill in a few details about the car.

Which bits are GRP, beyond, I assume, the wings? And is there aluminium used beyond the standard boot, bonnet and door skins?

As the petrol filler cap on the boot is a dummy, how do you fill it up? By opening the boot like a Healey, I assume?

For future reference, should anyone want to know what TR6 rims look like on an 'A, what size tyres are installed?

Is that a GRP or Alloy top? And the vent, I assume it's from a Mini Van, as the Works used to do. They're as rare as rocking horse poo over here!

Are all the electrics/computers for the MX5 engine under the bonnet, or are some behind the dash?

Sorry about all the questions, but I'm always Curious George.

TTFN

Derek Nicholson

Steve, if you don't mind, a question.... you mention that the top is works type and it has the appearance of an alloy top, is it? or is it a reproduction? if reproduction, where did you purchase it?

Thanks,

Ted

Hi Guys - to answer the questions :

Which bits are GRP, beyond, I assume, the wings? And is there aluminium used beyond the standard boot, bonnet and door skins?
- Doors and bonnet are alloy as per original. Boot is GRP. Boot floor is original steel, front scuttle is original steel, body strengthening strips are the original steel - and the rest - is GRP, ie all wings, valences and front and rear shrouds ! Not the usual "off the shelf" fibreglass wings etc - but all custom made by the previous owner (his business was making fancy ceiling mouldings etc for the construction industry) - a very clever and skilled man ! It really is a work of art in my eye, extremely heavy duty materials and superb finish and panel gaps etc

As the petrol filler cap on the boot is a dummy, how do you fill it up? By opening the boot like a Healey, I assume?
- Got it in one - open the boot and there is an original filler - just shortened and adapted to take the fuel return from the fuel injection

For future reference, should anyone want to know what TR6 rims look like on an 'A, what size tyres are installed?
- I don't know off the top of my head - will have to look when I get home if anyone wants to know.

Is that a GRP or Alloy top? And the vent, I assume it's from a Mini Van, as the Works used to do. They're as rare as rocking horse poo over here!
- Hard top is GRP - same heavy duty and quality as the body. Vent is steel - not sure of origin to be honest.

Are all the electrics/computers for the MX5 engine under the bonnet, or are some behind the dash?
- the ECU for the engine is behind the dash on the front bulkhead. The engine runs it's standard Mazda loom etc and then the rest of the car's electrics, lights, horn, indicators etc are standard MGA.

I hope that helps ! No problem with the questions - to be honest it is great to be able to share my own enthusiasm for the car with other genuine people.

I do have a very low mileage 1800cc Mazda engine and 6 speed gearbox wich I bought to install (just for the fun of it really !) - I just might still do this yet !!

Cheers
Steve
Steve Owen

Steve, the top is GRP, meaning plastic or fiberglass construction?, do you know what company manufactured it and if they are still available?

Have never seen a reproduction in the original Vanden Plas style over here.

Can anyone else comment as to availablity of this design?

Thanks,

Ted
T Persons

Hi Ted,
It is a "one off" manufacture by the previous owner for this car / his personal use so not commercially available I am afraid.
Cheers

Thanks, Steve, appreciate the follow through
