MG MGA - MGA wIndblocker
I have bought a Windblocker (part 458-294 )for my 1961 1600 Roadster from LB Car co and just started to fit it. The bolted on brackets (A) on each side (fitting on two soft top mounting holes )fitted ok (though one needed bending to match the other and fit against car sides ). The windblocker comes with two other brackets (B) which slot in the screen support and then bent rods fit into the fixed brackets A above . It all fitted BUT the end position of the windblocker is forward and slightly lower than the rear valence and the screen lower edge support is just at the top of the seats and digs into my back ...and the screen is against my head. Not too good ....... My rough calc is that the screen should be 4cm higher and 6 cm further to the rear so it is just above the valence and well clear of my bonce. Looks like new A brackets Any advice welcome from other souls who have fitted these units. Neil Ferguson |

I fitted mine and sounds like a similar problem. I contacted Jeff at LBC and the company that make the windblocker has made a new bracket to help with this problem. Maybe you got an old bracket. E-mail Jeff and see what he can do for you. |

Jeff..thanks for your advice. I have written to LB about the problemas you suggested ..have you received the new brackets and how and where does the Windblocker fit on the car now? Neil |

Hi Guys Is there any chance of us seeing one fitted correctly? How effective are they? I wasn't aware they were availible and have been "planning" to build a windstop one day. Regards, Dave |

Guys..whilst researching I also went back to the Little British site, see below, and found pics of the Windblocker fitted on an MGA...and I hate to say but it looks to be in exactly the same position as mine. You have to have a shorter bod than mine (6ft 2in )to have the seat in that position..I still need to move the screen further back. Is this what yours looks like,Jeff? www.lbcarco.com |

David..this is the pic on the LB car site I mentioned above.

Thanks Neil. Wonder how hard it will be to have the bottom edge "bent" in line with the body? Just wondering... Dave |

Neil I think that the use of side windows actually improves the wind buffeting more than this screen. I found this on an MX5 version where we could easily test all combinations. #1 solution was just to wind up the windows and it also meant that the roof could still be quickly put up. As long as you have the top clips on the side screens to stop them blowing outwards at high speed they cut significantly the wind inside the cabin. I drove into work this morning with the roof down but with windows on with no problem, and it was -6 degrees Celcius (thats 21 Fahrenheit for the metrically challenged out there). The addition of a wooly hat and a warm jacket was the only other thing needed. A fully working heater is bliss although I think a radiator blind may improve temperature further as the Temp. gauge never got to much further than the thermostat opening position. Neil |

In Mischievous frame of mind this morning. Not quite as cold here as in Belgium, just a pleasant -2 degrees celsius! These old cars are all about getting wind blown and wet! Today is woolly hat, gloves and sheepskin coat with collar turned up round the neck. What's all this about sidescreens and wind deflectors? Steve |
Steve Gyles |
I'm with Steve. Dress like you're going skiing. Hat, gloves, coat. Snap the tonneau over the passenger seat if you're going solo. That deflector is unnecessary, and just plain ugly too. Ken |

Steve, Ken With you on that one. If Ken doesn't need a wind deflector in Alaska then I guess nobody does? -7 today but still not cold enough to warrant wearing gloves!! Without the sidescreens up one hand gets very cold and one side of the face looks like it has taken a slap when you have driven for a while!! Unfortunately I need to drive to Germany tomorrow so no fun then but the cold weather is set to last for a couple of weeks. Plus side is that the sun is shining. Neil |

I also stand with Steve, Ken and Neil P on this one. I like the car for its looks and like the wind in my hair. An Irvin with collar up takes care of the back of the neck. I think it looks naff with hood down and side screens, and (probably, I've never seen one) wind deflector. Each to his own; I like my car just fine with its 3 synchro box, points, dynamo, non servo brakes etc. (OK, the engine is a little breathed upon and I have an anti-roll bar and longer diff.) Wind deflectors for me can go with Mazda engines, cruise control and heated seats! Steve, when does eccentric become plain insane? Neil (no.3) |

Ye Gods and small fishes!! I did not realise a wee technical problem would start a discourse on the pro and cons and wind buffeting and hairy chested exposed driving. Here in Oz have there is not too much of a problem with the ice on my cheeks and a woolly hat would cook the brain. I admire all you spartan types but basically all I wanted was to see if there is some helpful knowledge out there in the ether to assist with tailoring of the blocker as only basic work has been done by its manufacturer ! Don't agree with the comment re side screens and blocker on the MGA..but I did have an SL500 and it was true on that. I also find the sidescreens a real impediment to pleasurable driving..hardly ever have them on. But I have a windlocker and does help keep my perm. in place (!!) Dave in Queensland...I see no reason why you could not have a bent lower edge as well as moving it further back. It also occured to me . The end brackets on the blocker that slot into the socket supports by the seats (These are connected to the soft top bolt holes ) would need to be carefully made to still keep them vertical and obviously a new screen would need to be made (I would prefer one in fine mesh rather than plastic ..as per a design now available for the MGB). I actually think any decent fabrication shop would be able to make an improved design and I will proceed and do so. Enjoy the winter in the Northern Hemi....It is the 20 to 30oC here . Attach pic of my MGA..had it 18 years. |

Neil (Ferguson) I nearly came to visit you MGA guys on our way home from Perth, after Adelaide - will get down there 2009 with the Birdcage - MGA racer - if all goes to plan. Would like to drive as many race tracks as I can in 3 months holiday! Pic of The Birdcage attached. Been a logbooked racer since 1981. |

I too never use side screens (brand new never used or trimmed)or soft top but find the wind wings that came with the car very useful in stopping the buffeting gusts that come round the screen - they are very unobtrusive - barely visible. Looking forward to wearing my woolly hat on our local outing on Boxing Day . |

I also have a wind blocker and agree the design could be much improved. Not my most favorite part of the car but the other/better half finds it more comfy on those cool evening drives. Kris |

Hi all, does the hood fold down then ? gordon |
g c pugh |
Hi Neil, Do you come along to the MGCC (Vic) A register runs - I would like to have a look at the wind blocker. Regards Mike |
Mike Ellsmore |
Gordon, The hood will only fold if you have the correct King Dick flat plate hood spanner. It is lowered in order to polish the rear deck and windscreen top. Merry Christmas, Neil |
Neil McGurk |
Hi Neil, do you mean there's a spanner that I don't have !!!!! lol, I thought I had a coupe with a large sunroof, have a nice xmas gordon |

We agree with Cam , the royal we that is , you dont need side screens , we have them but dont use them , wind wings work well ,& also use leather flying hats in severe weather ,which means wet down here in glorius Devon, you do feel a bit of a pratt in this hat but wots new ,also they wont blow off!!!! best wishes to you all Colin & Theresa |
