MG MGA - MGB brake pistons in MGA 1600 brakes
Hi, My brakes started hanging up. I'd paid someone to rebuild them a year ago, but found out that my pistons were rusted and pitted. Yet another reason to do this kind of work yourself. Anyway... I read that it is completely possible to use MGB brake pistons (which are much, much cheaper) in MGA calipers if you just cut pin in the center of the cylinder. Apparently this pin isn't necessary. http://www.mgaguru.com/mgtech/brakes/bt104.htm I understand what to do, but before I start tearing into my calipers I would like to know if there is any downside to using MGB brake pistons. Any thoughts? Thanks, Darian |

Darian I have had them in mine for a couple of years with no problems.I used a dremel tool to cut off the pin.Shop around for the pistons tho, some newer ones are not chrome plated and I decided that I did not want to try them.Maybe some others have thoughts about them. |

Darian, Why not use stainless steel MGA pistons - no more problems with rust. I purchased some from a really nice man in New York called John Farrell. The quality is excellent (he makes them) and the cost was around 30 per cent of the usual UK price. Here is the link to his site: http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/tread/1046/id23.htm If the link fails just google his name and the product. Happy rebuilding Tony |

Thanks! Sounds perfect and not too expensive. Staninless steel seems like the perfect solution. |
