MG MGA - MGB Caliper on MGA Hub

Hi guys,

My fellow MG enthusiast here in japan has a 1600 with front discs an bad calipers (only assumed at this point that they are not rebuildable for whatever reason) will a set of B calipers mount to the A without modification (or that pesky adapter plate for the drum wheeled cars)?

I have a good set of B calipers that I am willing to let him have if he can put them to use...

Thank you,

Tommy

Tommy,

I have never tried these and they seem expensive for what they are.

Moss sell these adapter plates.

Or in the USA. $275

I'm sure they only onsell them though.
If you find out where, let me know.

Should be cheaper to fix the Originals

From a donor car complete MGB front suspension can be used on an A. I did it to get the better disc brakes on a 58 1500. The adapter plates would be easier. Fixing what you have is cheaper. Good luck.

All,
There is another source for the brackets up in Canada. I think his name is Jason Greene. Much more reasonable pricing. I have a set and they were perfect. If he doesn't see this post, I'll be glad to hunt up his company.

Here's the Canadian site for the MGB Caliper adaptor plates.

Hi,

I don't believe the MGB caliper will fit straight onto the MGA plate, you need to purchase one of the adapters.

I used the Greene ones and they were very well made and nicely finished, they fitted with no problems.

Greene states to use the hubs (I have wire wheeels 1500)) off of a 1600.. why not the hubs off of a mgb? since, the difference is they're coarse thread and cheaper than the 1600 fine thread.???? Mike

Don't MGB hubs feature tapered roller bearings while the MGA has conventional ball bearings?

Yeah ! I stand corrected.. thanks Doug you're right.

I fitted a pair of the adapter plates (£90 the pair), used MGB calipers and 1600 discs. Works well.

See how I did it on my car: http://freespace.virgin.net/stephen.gyles/index.htm

Steve Giles,
Gorgeous! Is that a metalic green or the best solid color poligh job ever done? What is the manufacturer and color number? I'm looking for a similar green.
Well Done!

It's a 2-pack non metallic Jaguar 'Hen' Green from the 1950s. I got it through Bob West after seeing it on one of his rebuilds. If you wish I will contact Bob to find out more details.

Steve,
That would be most appreciated. If you would, could you ask him to put out more pictures of the factory fastback? There seem to be none around that show the rear view.
Thanks again,

Hi guys,

Thanks for all the advice. I think he is going to bite the bullet and 'try' to find new or prof. rebuilt 1600 calipers.

Steve, great site with lots of informative pics. That looks like a conversion I may do for my 1500!

Well, looks like we are off to Mt Fuji anyway as the owner of the 1600 is, how shall I say, not poor and he also has a LHD 'Crabeye' AH Sprite he is itching to drive.

Steve,
Nicely done! (The car and the web site!) I have done exactly the same mods to my '56, with the addition of a 3.9 differential from an early B and pertronix ignition. It makes the car great for road trips.

Hi Folks

Austin Princess 4 pot calipers fit the MGB adaptor brackets, you need to add some brake pipe plumbing as the Princess uses twin hoses (not possible on the MGA because of suspension/steering clearance) a single twincam hose will do. I've fitted standard ferodo pads and a servo, a huge improvement in braking
