MG MGA - MGB clutch

Hello, I need some parts to swap out my MGA clutch to MGB clutch befor engine change 18v6723...1960 MGA 1600
I need...a flywheel from a 64 67 MGB 18gb or 18ga
Also Front gearbox cover from and clutch release arm from 62 67 MGB.
Also need, engine front plate from 55 to mid 74 MGB.
I have no idea from where to source this stuff but from here. Youall have been so much help in the past and with your help and Barneys I am sure that I can get thet job done. Thanks, Neal Turner

Use the MGA front plate. The MGB plate is slightly different shape and does not accept the MGA engine mounts.

All MGB through mid 1974 use the same engine mounts and engine mount brackets as all MGA (except right side of Twin Cam engine). Engine front plates from the whole date range have to be close enough to same to accept the same engine mounts.

The front plate that came with my 18V did not accept the MGA engine mount bracket. I tried adapting it, having to drill extra holes, but as I recall, one of the required holes was outside the edge of the plate. I had to refit with an MGA front plate.

There is a thread in the archives that covers it well; titled 18V-836-Z-L block in MGA, dated 1 April 2005.

The problem is with engines from 1975 onwards.

MGB Cars with the round engine mounts have a different front plate. The 1600 flywheel can be used but need new locating dowels.

If you are using an MGB clutch with a MGA gearbox, Moss (US) have the MGB clutch lever #190-580 and the carbon bearing #190-301 and the bearing clips ##190-570.
They do not have the MGB front gearbox cover.
There is a used cover on Ebay. The owner does not know what it fits but it has a Mowog casting mark #22B55 AB. This is the same Mowog number on my MGB front cover for a 3 synchro MGB gearbox.

Mick, Thanks a lot. I have secured the front trans plate from e-bay. I still have some confusion about the front eng plate. Thanks, Neal Turner

MGB front plate changed in 1974-1/2 with the round engine mounts (and forward positioned radiator). To fit later MGB engine to MGA use the pre-1974 MGB front plate, or an MGA front plate (same engine mounts).
Barney Gaylord

Neal,
I think I have a front engine plate. Where are you in NC?

Jim
Jim Ferguson

Jim, I think I have the problem solved. I have read that the front eng plate from 18v672zl693 is from a 1973-1974 engine. This particular eng number is more dated to 1973 and should work. Hopefully.
I am in Wilmington, N.C. Thanks, Neal Turner

Steve, there are only 2 engine plates for the B.
early is 12H 1387 chrome bumper
late is 12H 3583 rubber bumper

The MGA uses the chrome bumper one, ie 12H 1387.

I believe there was another used on very very early 1500's, but I have never seen one, and have no part number.

Confusion might arise because of other B series engines from Magnette, Cambridge etc.

Something like 158 very early production MGA had no tensioner on the timing chain, and a simple pear shape timing cover. I suspect those early plates could be drilled to accept the tensioner and later cover.

Mine is a late (after 1975) 18V engine. I am as certain as I can be that it came from a rubber bumper B. It even had the round engine mounts on it when I bought it in an MGB specialist garage services closing down auction. It also had the timing cover with the timings marks on top - a great bonus.

The front plate is definitely a different shape to the MGA and unsuitable.

Steve, You are correct. That is 12H 3583. 18V were only fitted to rubber bumper cars.

"I need...a flywheel from a 64 67 MGB 18gb or 18ga"

No one else mentioned this so I will. There were no 18GA (3 main) engines made in that period and if you got a flywheel from one, it won't bolt onto any 18GB or later 5 main bearing) crankshaft.
Bill Spohn

18G and 18GA were 3-main, 1962-1964.
18GB was 5-main, 1965-1967. This was mated to the 3-synchro gearbox with small flywheel.
1968 and later were all 5-main with larger flywheel mated to the 4-synchro gearbox.

To mate any 5-main engine to a 3-synchro gearbox, you need the flywheel from 1965-1967 model MGB.
