MG MGA - MGB engine in MGA
Hi Guys - I've fitted a 5-bearing MGB engine in my MGA. My question is will I be able to use the standard MGA exhaust manifold? I've tried fitting the MGA exhaust pipe to the MGA manifold, but the triangular clamping flange appears to be obstructed by the engine block, which is a slightly different profile in that arrear, which I think is due to the different oil pump used in the 5-bearing block. Do I need to grind the flange to get it to fit, or will I then meet other problems? Regards David |

David I transferred all the external bits from my 1500 to a 5-bearing 1800 without any issues. Steve |

So did I, on two occasions. As far as I can see they are interchangeable. Some pictures might be helpful. Are you sure it's a 'B'? Check below the front carb for the '1800' cast into the block. Barry. |

As suggested by Steve and Barry, MGA exhaust manifold should ft without any problems. John |

In fact, according to Peter Burgess, the original MGA manifold is one of the best options available for the B engine - used same on my 18V conversion several years ago Bayard |

Hi Guys - many thanks for your responses. The only way I could get the exhaust flange onto the manifold was by loosening the manifold nuts so I could ease the manifold away from the engine block. With the exhaust attached, and the manifold tightened up, the flange was almost touching the engine block. I decided to grind away the section of the block that prevented the flange from mating with the manifold(not by much) - see picture, and now I can get the flange onto the manifold without having to remove the manifold from the block. I'm not sure if the design of the engine block changed during the different production runs - mine's an 18V engine. Regards David |
