MG MGA - mineral build-up in block & head
holy smoke, It looks like the PO used hard tap water to fill the rad from '55-'76 in my newly purchased '55 TF. I swear, the openings in the head, branch tube, and engine block are half closed-up by rusty stalagmites. Will hot tanking in the machine shop dissolve this stuff, or what? (I'm posting on several pages to get mucho responses.) thanks, Tyler |

Using a standard descaling acid will remove these deposits. Hot tanking will too, but remove all aluminium parts and do them separately yourself |

Tyler, acid is the way to go, but don't use muriatic - it will eat the iron as well. As Dominic says, ready formulated descaler (CLR, etc) These are organic weak acids (citric, oxalic etc.) |

Products such as CLR could take weeks to remove any real buildup. Muriatic acid in a mixture of 3 parts hot water will work fine, just don't leave it sit for days. Fill the block and let it sit an hour. Rinse it out and see what you have left. Maybe repeat the process a few times, and scrape around while its soaking. That'll speed the process. Jeff |
