MG MGA - Mixture Adjustment

Heading back after GT-47 and finally down to "normal" altitude (about 2000') after climbing 8500' a few times. One of the GT hosts leaned out my carbs as I arrived and I just went to richen them but got confused as to clockwise for a moment. I think I have them back where they were (even exhaust note), but I'm curious if there's a way to get to a standard starting point (e.g. go all the way in one direction and then back to a midpoint).

Please advise.

Thanks!

Ken,

The way I set the base line for the mixture is to remove the piston cups and pistons and set both the jets to 0.060 below the bridge. Then go back and repeat up and down as necessary.

Be sure not to mix the pistons between the cups.

Hi Ken,
hope you and Melon had a great time at GT 47.

According to the "MGA Guru", if you have absolutely lost your jet set-up, you can get relatively close to it if you first screw both of the jet nuts up to the fully weak position. (by turning clock-wise as seen from underneath)

Then you unscrew them both by two full turns (or 12 flats on the nuts) and you should then be relatively close to the correct settings. Or in other words, the engine should now start.

Then you adjust both jets (by equal amounts) until you get the engine running to your liking.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Cheers

Thanks Colyn – without calipers on the trip, this is exactly what I was looking for!

Seems I did fine with my haphazard adjustment. After 600 miles it is running strong, climbing long hills at up to 75 mph without any drama.

I’ll do a complete check when we arrive home!

GT-47 was an excellent event – the host NAMGAR chapter did a great job arranging day tours and local entertainment.

Here’s a photo of us at the Glen Eyrie Castle where we enjoyed High Tea!

Cheers,

- Ken
