MG MGA - Mk11 Flywheel query

A Club member is in the process of fitting a Vitesse MX5 (Miata) gearbox to his Mk11 MGA. He has discovered that his flywheel has a groove in it just beyond where the original friction disk ran (see photo). This flywheel has also been modified to take the MGB clutch cover (3 pin).
Do you think this groove has been put in the flywheel as part of a lightening process or do some MGA/MGB flywheels have this groove?
The MX5 clutch plate is slightly larger than the MGA clutch pate (~3/16")so part of it will overlap the groove.

Hi Mike,

the groove is original to MKII flywheel.
