MG MGA - Modified A Class

The NAMGAR defines the Altered A Class as "any vehicle that has had structural modifications to either chassis or body in order to install an engine, gearbox, etc"

My question is does that include the Moss 5 speed gearbox which has little in the way of "structural modificications"--some holes drilled for a new cross support?

Also, I am planning on installing the Moss kit in a 1959 1500. Does anyone have experience with this kit?

This is the same tranie as sold by Hi-Gear Engineering. John Esposito at Quantumechanics also sells them -- may save you a little money:<Quantumechanics@earthlink.net>Phone:203-459-9612 I have one in my '59 1600 -- Love it!

WCK - I just checked with George Merryweather, the Chairman of NAMGAR and he said that a 5-speed conversion does NOT put the car into the Altered class. The intent is that Altered is for cars that have been modified such that they are difficult to put back to original condition. Here's his exact reply:

"The 5 speed does NOT put the car into Altered A under the current guidelines. That may be something that we have to address, but the intent is that 'bolt-on' type of changes do not require the car to change to Altered. A retrofit is easy. Whereas something welded, etc. is viewed as 'not easy' to change back, hence it is 'Altered'."

I think the older 5-speed conversions and the mgb full-synchro conversions required that you cut the the trans mounting eyes off the frame. Is that not the case with the Moss kit? I never seriously considered a 5-speed because I was reluctant to do any cutting.

I have the Hi-Gear conversion from 7 years ago. No cutting off the transmission mounting eyes. Just the drilling of the holes as previously described.
