MG MGA - Moss Stub stacks
Has anyone installed the Moss Stub Stacks under the stock air cleaners in their MGA. I am thinking of installing these and I was wondering if they fit under the stock air cleaners. I have an MGA 1500 Roadster with no modifications to the engine. I presume that they are the 1-1/4" carbs ( I haven't measured). Do the stacks increase the performance in a noticeable way? .. CR |

Hi CR Your carbs are H4's which I think are 1½" SU's. I have bought some velocity stacks to fit inside the original Vokes air cleaners. Have a look on the MG Experience website for more information and a UK source for these stacks. The pair I received were superbly made and very reasonably priced. Good Luck Brian |

Check out the mgaroadster.co.uk website CR, Steve Gyles has designed a set of velocity stacks to fit inside the air cleaner as Brian has already said. They have been tested on a dynomometer and bring a definite increase in power and improve throttle response. Steve will tell you where you can get these from but, as far as I know, they are produced in batches and you may have to wait until there has been a production run. I have some much longer ram pipes fitted to my engine which have individual foam air filters fitted to them. However, I have never run the car without them and so I cant tell you if they make any difference. Colyn |

The stub Stacks that Steve Gyles made up are what originally peaked my interest. His design is most "elegant' and simple. The dyno results is what got me thinking. I am putting together a Moss order, hence the inquiry. I still would like to know if anyone has fitted the Moss stacks. Maybe Steve will chime in with further information. .. CR |

Colyn et al I wondered why my ears were burning earlier this afternoon! Just to put it into context, various members of this BBS came up with the design parameters of a bespoke stub stack for our car following a similar query by myself to the opening post in this thread. I merely bought a block of aluminium and turned 3 pairs out on my lathe to the dimensions given to me. We had them dyno tested; then Steve Ash came up with a local engineering firm to turn them out at cost price to BBS members. Best to contact Steve Ash at esselay@hotmail.co.uk to see what stock he has. The write up on my website is: http://www.mgaroadster.co.uk/Stub_Stacks.htm Steve |
