MG MGA - Movement in Sierra Gearbox
A very puzzling thing happened on a recent 1600km MG trip. As we turned into a display area, there were all sorts of knocks and rattles from behind the engine. I have a Sierra gearbox, installed some six years ago, and have no problems at all up to now. After inspecting the underneath of the car, the exhaust pipe was hitting on the cross member (it hadn't been knocked), and the top right rear of the gearbox inspection plate was rubbing on the tunnel. At idle, there are plenty of noises from the aforementioned contact points, but at speed this disappears. My first thought was an engine mount problem, causing the engine and gearbox to twist, but an inspection of the mounts appears to show no problem...apart from the RHS engine mounting bracket which is slightly off a right angle...I've read somewhere that this may cause problems, but I'm sure that the bracket has been like this for many years. The other item I have noticed is that the tail shaft does not run true down the tunnel, but this may be nothing unusual..it is slightly to the side, and strangely enough on the opposite side to where the top of the gearbox is hitting the tunnel. Any suggestions appreciated. |

Do you have the two stabalizer plates that hold the exhaust pipe to the trans to space it out and prevent it from moving? How is the rear trans mounting plate that you had to put in for the new trans. |

On my car the shaft is also slightly off centre too Is the gearbox mount secure, including the rubber pedestal? |
